2 About the TexES Science content
Need a score of 240 to pass (Both Qualifier and State exams) Must take qualifier and pass before taking the state exam. You will focus on this exam a lot in MTS but it is better to start early The qualifier is $15 (Diagnostic is addtl. $5) The state exam is ~$140 The different exams Science 7-12 (236)* Life Science 7-12 (238) Chemistry 7-12 (240)** Physical Science 6-12 (237) Physical Science/Mathematics (243) *Recommended – You should really take this one over the others ** No qualifier available

3 120 questions, 3 hours to answer
Must first be allowed to take the exam (Talk to your master teacher) The qualifier has less questions and less time to complete Approx. 120 questions (some are blank) 3 hour time limit to complete the qualifier (can take 2 to 2.5 hours to complete) You can request a score diagnostic (Additional $5), this is optional but can help. Scores are available 2 business days after the exam This one is harder than the state one.

4 Where to take the exam Test is administered at the Student Service Center 1. Make sure to take at least your UH ID for this test Arrive a few minutes early Double check your registration date and time!!!

5 The “Real” exam The State exam is the “real” exam that you will sign up through a TEA account. Don’t worry about this until you have passed your content qualifier Test locations vary but UH is one possible location 140 scored questions, 5 hours to complete (no blanks) ~10 questions will not be scored Scores are done randomly depending on when you take it, you will usually get an saying your scores are ready.

7 Study Resources Take the practice test online! Go to texes-ets.org for preparation manuals, and video tutorials. You can get text message reminders about test prep when you sign up for a test! High school text books – teachHOUSTON! Especially for the Science composite!

8 Study Tips Review Competencies (46) and the 10 Domains they are organized in Make a list of topics of what you feel you know the least Study groups! Take the Practice Test Online Separate by Domain so you can easily see your weak points. Go through every question. The diagnostic report from the qualifier can help

12 What to do now If you are in CI or MTS, you should start yesterday
If you are in Step 2 or KL, read up on things you may have forgotten If you feel ready to take it, talk to your Master Teacher to see your options Study for this test, while the content is easy, it is easy to forget something easy that you did in middle school.

13 I Passed my content qualifier, now what?
Congratulations, you are now ready for the state exam, but there are some things you need to do first. You must contact Dr. Segura and tell her that you have passed your content exam and you would like to take the state exam. She will send in a request to allow you to take it, you cannot take the state exam without doing this!! The steps needed are in the teachHOUSTON website:
