Moon Motion & Pennies

Synchronous Rotation of Moon

Exit Ticket What causes the moon to look different in the sky?

What kind of motion does the moon have in space?
Rotates on its axis once in 27.3 Earth days Revolves around the Earth once in 27.3 Earth days Synchronized Rotation = length of time for 1 rotation is equal to length of time for 1 revolution. Must be synchronized for us to only see one side of the Moon from Earth.

How do we know the length of rotation and revolution is 27

Thursday 5/5/16 Notebook Entry: Enrico and Leah live in opposite hemispheres. Enrico lives in Santiago, Chile, which is in the Southern Hemisphere. Leah lives in New York City which is in the Northern Hemisphere. They both gazed at the Moon on the same evening. Enrico noticed there was a full Moon when he looked up. What do you predict Leah saw when she looked up into the sky from her location? A – New Moon B- Crescent Moon C- Half Moon D – Gibbous Moon E- Full Moon Provide an explanation for your answer. How did you decide what the Moon would look like in opposite hemispheres?

Earth and Moon in motion

What causes the moon to look different each night?
rises in the East and sets in the West due to Earth’s rotation rises at different times due to where moon is in its orbit half of the moon is always illuminated by the sun. we are only able to see certain portions of the illuminated half So the moon has a different look throughout its orbit The Earth’s Moon What cause moonlight?
