Instead of a traditional journal, we’ll use the first 5 minutes of class to finish the student survey from last class.
If you’ve already finished, work on something for another class, or read a book. I don’t want anybody on their phones during this time.

You guys are the first ones in our new program. These are the skills that you would have already mastered:
Sourcing
Corroboration (Comparison)
Causation
Close Reading (Prioritizing evidence/reasons/counterclaims)

7. Sourcing
Purpose: Determine the reliability of the author

8. Corroboration Purpose: Make sure the author isn’t off his rocker
How: Comparing different accounts of the same event.
Generally, the more “corroborating sources” (sources that agree) of an account, the more likely it is to be true.

9. Causation Purpose: Figure out why something happened
How: Identify previous events that led to the event you’re studying
Causation works the other way, too. What did your event lead to?

10. Close Reading
Purpose: Make sure that you understand what the author is saying
How: Identifying details that impact your interpretation of an event.
