A genre is a category or type of literature that is generally broken down into fiction and nonfiction subcategories.

4 Science Fiction Defined
Definition: SF is a genre of fiction in which the stories often tell about science and technology of the future.

5 Elements of Science Fiction
Conflict (two types) a. People and their problems such as the evil scientist who tries to rule the world. b. Machines and the problems they can cause for example, good robot gone bad.

6 More About Science Fiction
SF is when a writer takes a known scientific fact and imagines what might happen if certain events or circumstances take place such as: a. Building a space shuttle b. Making a robot c. Constructing a time machine.

7 Science Fiction vs. Fantasy
Science Fiction and Fantasy stories are both make believe stories, however fantasies involve beings and events that do not exist in real life. SF literature focuses on real or imagined developments in science or technology. SF takes on real science ideas and advances them into the future.
