6. Letter to Ourselves…
A new school semester brings opportunities for new goals, new habits, and new beginnings. Your assignment is to write a letter to your future self about what you hope to accomplish and experience this year
In other words, when you look back on this year, what do you hope you will have done? How do you hope you will have grown and changed? Your letter will be given back to you – and only you! – at the end of the school year.

As you write, consider the following ideas and questions:
How did last semester go for you? How were your grades?
What are some ways that you’d like to change this semester?
What kinds of grades do you hope to earn?
What habits would you like to develop or break?
Do you have any athletic or sports goals?
What are your academic goals? Do you want to improve your grades? Be more organized? Be more responsible? Decrease your tardies or improve attendance?
What do you want to do differently this semester from last semester?

9. Conflict
Definition:
In literature, conflict is the struggle between opposing forces in a story. It creates tension and excitement for the reader.

10. Conflict in Literature
1. Think about the last book you read OR the last movie you watched. What was the conflict the main character had to deal with?

11. Internal vs External Two Types of Conflict…. Internal Conflict
External Conflict
Person vs. Self
Person vs. Person
Person vs. Society
Person vs. Circumstances
Internal vs External

12. Internal Conflict There is only ONE type of internal conflict.
Person vs. Self.
A struggle within one's self; a person must make a decision, overcome a fear, resist an urge, etc.
Internal conflict is NOT visible to others
Example:
Ms. Lane really wants to go shopping after school, but she also has papers to grade. She is conflicted about whether or not to go.

13. External COnflict
There are THREE types of external (outside) conflict:
Person vs. Person
Person vs. Society
Person vs. Circumstances

14. PERSON VERSUS PERSON Person versus Person
Ms. Lane wants to take her students on a field trip, but Dr. Key says no.
Josh’s best friend is pressuring him to skip school on Friday, but Josh wants to attend.
A mother tries to put her 2 year old down for a nap, but the child keeps getting up.  

15. PERSON VERSUS SOCIETY Person Versus Society Neo in the Matrix
Katniss in The Hunger Games
Clarissa hates wearing uniforms and comes to school in jeans, but the principals and teachers make her change her clothes every time.
You want pizza for dinner, but everyone else in your family wants spaghetti.

A ship crew knows they must deliver some important packages but there is a TERRIBLE storm brewing.
Jordan wants to take his girlfriend on a picnic, but it has been raining all day.
Maria needs to type a paper for school, but her family’s computer is not working.

A young girl wants to be a famous actress but has terrible stage fright
Two brothers both want to be athlete of the year and have to compete against each other
A new business owner wants to change the world through his recycling program, but the community prefers to throw things away.

Janie and her sister want to have a picnic in the park, but it’s very chilly outside.
Leo is extremely angry with his brother for wearing his shoes without asking. He wants to shove him, but he doesn’t want to get in trouble.
Lauren is trying to get her advisory class to welcome a new student. However, all of her classmates want to tease the new girl.

20. Exit Slip
Choose ONE of the types of conflicts (person vs self, person vs person, person vs society, or person vs circumstances. Then, write a short story (at least half a page) about a character dealing with your chosen type of conflict. Your story needs a beginning, middle, and end – show me what you can do!  Again, make sure the conflict is resolved by the end of your story.
