1 The Mole and Molar Mass

2 Atomic Structure Review
Average Mass Atomic Mass Weighted average of all known isotopes of an element Stated in g/mol in periodic table Molecular /Formula Mass The sum of the atomic masses of all the elements in a compound Added all g/mol for all components of the formula so answer is g/mol

3 Calculating the Formula Mass
3 Steps to calculate the formula mass/molecular mass Above all Double Check to make sure you have the correct formula Count the atoms of each element Multiply the number of atoms by the elements atomic mass (round mass to hundredths) Add all the masses together

4 B. Molar Mass Examples carbon aluminum zinc 12.01 g/mol 26.98 g/mol

5 B. Molar Mass Examples water sodium chloride H2O
2(1.01) = g/mol NaCl = g/mol

6 B. Molar Mass Examples sodium bicarbonate sucrose NaHCO3
(16.00) = g/mol C12H22O11 12(12.01) + 22(1.01) + 11(16.00) = g/mol

7 The Mole, Chemistry's Mascot

8 Units of Measurement Fundamental Units Dozen = 12 things
Bakers dozen= 13 things Pair= 2 things Decade = 10 years Gross = 144 things Ream = 100 things I Mole = 6.02 x 1023 things (Avogadro’s number)= 602 sextillion things (atoms, molecules, ions, pennies…)

9 Measuring with Moles The Mole is a counting unit
Called the chemist’s dozen Used to count number of Atoms, Molecules (nm + nm)(m + nm)... We can count both atoms, molecules or ions We can count in groups (n, moles) or individual particles (N) using the defined grouping definition of Avogadro’s number (NA) n= N/NA (the NAN equation)

10 Conversions with Moles
How do you find mass of one mole of substance? We can do this if we know the formula When we do this we get the MOLAR MASS, mm or M The mass in grams of 1 mole of substance is equal to the formula mass Units: grams/mol n=m/mm (the M&n equation)

11 Conversions with Moles
Mass = number of moles Molar mass

12 Super Mole Highway So Far we Can Convert Between
Grams (mass,m) Moles (amount in mols, n) Using molar mass (mm) Particles (ungrouped number of things, Na Using Avogador’s #, (N) The Mole Highway will help us

13 Super Mole Highway molar mass (g/mol) 6.02  1023 (mm) (particles/mol)
÷ x 6.02  1023 (particles/mol) (Na) X ÷ MASS IN GRAMS MOLES NUMBER OF PARTICLES
