1
The Rock Cycle Weathering and erosion, which are external processes, produce the sediment from which sedimentary rocks form.
2
Igneous Rock DID YOU KNOW?
Igneous is derived from the Latin ignis, meaning fire. Most of the seafloor is made of Basalt an EXTRUSIVE (Volcanic) IGNEOUS ROCK
3
Igneous – Formed from the cooling of molten rock
4
Igneous Rock Intrusive- IR that form from the cooling
of magma inside the Earth. LARGE CRYSTALS=SLOW COOLING Extrusive-IR that form at the Earth’s Surface. SMALL CRYSTALS=FAST COOLING
5
Lava Extrusive Lava Lava Intrusive Magma
6
Sedimentary Rocks
7
Sedimentary Rocks DID YOU KNOW?
75% of rocks exposed at Earths surface are sedimentary Sedimentary rocks form in various regions oceans, lakes, rivers, beaches glaciated areas deserts
8
Sedimentary Rock Sedimentary – Formed in layers as a result of pressure on sediments (small pieces of rock)
10
Sedimentary Rocks Form By Three Main Processes
Compaction- Sediments get compressed and compacted. Cementation-Small crystals precipitate and act as glue that holds the rock together. Precipitation-Crystals precipitate directly from solution.
11
Metamorphic Rocks
12
Metamorphic Rocks DID YOU KNOW? Metamorphism means of changed form
Metamorphic rocks form under high temperature and pressure
13
Metamorphic – Formed from older “parent rock” (either igneous or sedimentary) under intense heat and/or pressure far beneath the earth’s surface.
