2. GDP The best barometer of countrys economic standing is measured by its GDP. India, the second most populated country of the world has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies. In the previous four years, economy grew at 9%.In 2008- 09 Indias economy-GDP grew by 6.5% due to global recession. The Indian economy is expected sustain a growth rate of 8% for the next three years up to 2012.

EDUCATION India is the second largest Education market of the world India has around 370 universities and 18000 colleges out of which 115 universities and 2,100 colleges teach various engineering disciplines. With 12 million students on their rolls, and half a million teachers teaching in all disciplines. Engineering colleges in the country have been growing at 20 per cent a year, while business schools have grown at 60 per cent. After China producing 600,000 engineering graduates India produced around 5,00,000 number of engineering graduates in the year 2006-07,out of which 30 per cent were computer engineers. United States and Europe produces only 70,000 100,000 and engineering graduates every year.

7. The engineer graduates from top 10 engineering institutes of India get a maximum and minimum of 24 lakh and 2 lakh per year respectively with an average of 4.5 lakh per year. The students passing out from top 10 business school gets a maximum and minimum salary of 34 lakh and 4.5 lakh respectively with an average of 8.2 lakh per year.

8. POWER India has the fifth largest and third largest electricity generation capacity in the world and Asia respectively. India is the 6th largest energy consumer in the world Indias requires an investment of $200 billion, to be able to fulfill projected power demand by 2012. At present, India has an installed capacity of 132,110 mw which was 1362MW in 1947.

9. HIGHWAYS AND ROADS India has an extensive road network of 3.3 million km–the second largest in the world. Roads carry about 61% of the freight and 85% of the passenger traffic. Highways/Expressways constitute about 66,000 km (2% of all roads) and carry 40% of the road traffic. The Government of India spends about Rs.18000 crores (US $ 4 billion) annually on road development.

10. Present Status of Indian Highways & Roads The ambitious National Highway Development Project (NHDP) of the Government is at an advanced stage of implementation. Key projects under implementation are: The Golden Quadrilateral (GQ-5846 km of 4 lane highways) North-South & East-West Corridors (NSEW-7300 km of 4 lane highways) Program for 4-laning of about 14,000 km of National Highways is on.

RAILWAYS Salient features of Indian Railways: Total route coverage > 63500KM Number of locomotives >7900 Number of fright wagons > 222400 Number of passenger coaches > 42500 Number of persons employed >1.6 million Number of trains operated per day> 14000 Indian rail network is the second largest in the world under single management. Indian rail is the fourth largest freight carrier amongst the worlds railways. Indian rail network is the largest carrier of passengers amongst the worlds railway system.

12. TOURISM Unity in Diversity The figures reaching a record 4.5 million in 2006. The tourism industry is the second highest foreign exchange earner in the economy. Tourism industry contributed to 5.9 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product and provided employment to 18 million people. This figure is expected to go up to 24.8 million by 2010. As per reports the tourism industry will contribute close to Rs 8, 50,000 crores to Indias GDP by 2020.
