5. History of Regulation
Ale brewed and sold from Anglo Saxon times Late 12C onwards Standard measures and quality overseen by manorial courts Brewers hung out an ale stake with leaves on the end to show ale ready for testing. By 15C regulation by Justices of the Peace By 17C significant regulation on prices measures selling times etc. 18C License required for selling beer.

6. Inns 12C Onwards Initially a large private house
Hall and parlours for meal and business
Usually had guest rooms, stabling, a yard and barns for storage
Largest building after the Church
Proprietor a person of importance
Respectable establishment
Social gatherings, sporting events, performances, courts & inquests
Often on Turnpike Roads – Coach services.
Hub for carriers ( Click and Collect!)

7. The Bay Horse Inn
Originally the Horse and Jockey? Present building dates from mid 1700 Was it an inn rather than an alehouse? Yorkshire Gazette January 10th 1863 – Terrington Coursing Meeting Probably had stables, yard and storage James Hawken was a carrier Did it provide accommodation?

1910 Land Tax – Owned by Charles Arminson (The Hollies) Widow Annie Arminson died 25th January 1937 Probably not owned by Castle Howard Estate. Ellerby ?

Before 1822 Licencees premises not identified Records exist ; 1822/4 Thomas and then Margaret Spink Richard Hicks and Ellen Hicks until 1807 (Probably Cross Keys) Mary Williamson 1790 Jane Williamson 1791/2 John Hichill 1791/2 Edmund Grundill 1795/1807 Robert Campleman 1790/1807

1822/4 Uriah Agar Licensee at the Bay Horse Inn 2 other Pubs: Black Bull and Cross Keys 1841 (Census) William Hawken wife 4 children 2 servants 1871 William, two daughters and son James. John Wright lodger 1881 James Hawken his wife 2 children and a servant 1910 (Land Tax) Mr Moor at Bay Horse 1911 James is a farmer and carter. Sam and Rose Atha are innkeepers but place not identified.
