1 Sponge How are these items similar? How are they different? Answer: All are clothing, but They all perform a different function. Darwin noticed the same thing with the Galapagos finches.

2 Sponge Describe the difference between Selective Breeding
And Natural Selection.

3 How Does Evolution Happen?

4 In 1831, Charles Darwin, a 21 year-old naturalist, boarded a
British naval ship, HMS Beagle, and began a voyage Around the world. Darwin observed that the animals and plants on the Galapagos Island were similar but not identical to plants and animals on the nearby South American mainland. Example: he noticed the finches on the mainland Ecuador differed slightly from the finches on the Galapagos Islands.

5

6 Darwin thought about how farmers would selectively
Produce farm animals with certain traits (selective breeding). He thought wild animals and plants could change in a Similar way but that the process would take much Longer because variations would be due to chance (Natural Selection).

7 I. Four steps of Natural Selection
a. overproduction b. Genetic Variation c. Struggle to Survive d. Successful Reproduction

8 II. Formation of a New Species
a. Separation b. Adaptation c. Division

9 Vocabulary 1. Selective Breeding- Breeding of organisms that have a
Certain desired trait. 2. Trait- Distinguishing qualities that can be passed From one generation to another. 3. Natural selection- The process by which organisms With favorable traits survive and Reproduce at a higher rate than Organisms without the favorable Trait.

10 Sponge Describe a situation where natural selection is Observed.
