1 3 Nephi 28-30 “The doctrine of translation is one of those mysteries that has eluded humankind. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that “the doctrine of translation is a power which belongs to this (Melchizedek) Priesthood. There are many things which belong to the powers of the Priesthood and the keys thereof, that have been kept hid from before the foundation of the world; they are hid from the wise and prudent to be revealed in the last times” (Teachings, 170). Most protestant theologians make no specific reference to the doctrine of translated beings in their Bible dictionaries.

2 “Many have supposed that the doctrine of translation was a doctrine whereby men were taken immediately into the presence of God, and into eternal fullness, but this is a mistaken idea. Their place of habitation is that of the terrestrial order, and a place prepared for such characters He held in reserve to be ministering angels unto many planets, and who as yet have not entered into so great a fullness as those who are resurrected from the dead” (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, 4:210).

3 There place of habitation is that of the Terrestrial Order, and a place prepared for such characters He (God) held in reserve to be ministering angels” (Teachings, 170). With the exception of the account of Elijah (2 Kings 2:11) and Enoch (Gen 5:24; also Heb 11:5), there are no biblical passages which are generally interpreted as describing those who have been translated or that explain their circumstances after being translated. Some scholars acknowledge the possibility that the phrase in John 21:22-23 has reference to John being translated. D&C 7 was a result of this dilemma. The Prophet Joseph Smith said that “translated beings cannot enter in to rest until they have undergone a change equivalent to death” (History of the Church, 4:425).

4 3 Nephi 28:1-3 A. One by one, what is the desire of me, after I am gone to the Father? B. Age of a man = 72 C. A day of judgement for all 12. How? D. Our desires, if righteous, are granted!

5 What is the difference between being transfigured or being translated?
Answer: Time!

10 The Ministry of the Three Nephites
“There are no angels who minister to this earth but those who do belong or have belonged to it” (D&C 130:5). “Translated bodies are designed for future missions” (Teachings, 191). They have been here on the face of the earth - advocates of righteousness and contending against Satan and his adversaries (Seek Ye Earnestly, , Joseph Fielding Smith).

11 We can say as Elder John W
We can say as Elder John W. Taylor did: you will find that many districts where the Elders of Israel cannot reach will be penetrated by these men who have power over death;… My testimony is that these men are going abroad in the nations of the earth before the face of your sons, and they are preparing the hearts of the children of men to receive the Gospel. They are administering to those who are heirs of salvation, and preparing their hearts to receive the truth, just as a farmer prepares the soil to receive the seed. The Lord has promised that He would send His angels before the face of His servants, and He does so (John W. Taylor, Conference Report, Oct. 1902, 75).

12 The Lord ceased translating faithful people
The Lord ceased translating faithful people. Rather, they were permitted to die and go into the spirit world, there to perform the ever increasing work needed in that sphere (Millennial Messiah, 285).

13 What can we learn from the Three Nephites?
It should be our desire and design to strive to bind Satan in our lives, for “when Satan is bound in a single home – when Satan is bound in a single life - the Millennium has already begun in that home, in that life” (Kimball, 172). We can and must do all that we can to help bring souls unto Christ. This is the work of the translated Nephites, and it is our work too. “No longer does blood (the life-giving element of our present mortality (flow in their veins. Procreation ceases.. They have power to move and live in both mortal and an unseen sphere… Millennial man will live in a state akin to translation. His body will be changed so that it is no longer subject to disease or death as we know it.. He will, however, have children” (Bruce R. McConkie, Millennial Messiah, 644).

14 3 Nephi 28:12-13, 36-38 Why did the Lord touch the nine and not the three? “The three Nephites… wanted to tarry until Jesus came, and that they might He took them into the heavens and endowed them with the power of translation… and brought them back to the earth. Thus they received power to live until the coming of the Son of Man” (Franklin D., Richards, Journal of Discourses, 25:237).

15 “Names of the Three Nephites?”
“Late in his life, Oliver Huntington, an early LDS pioneer, wrote or dictated a shelf full of reminiscences, including those concerning his youthful association with Joseph Smith. “Historians find that some of what he put down does not square with most other reports. The discrepancy may have to do with inaccuracies in recall because of age, still perhaps Huntington did remember facts that others forgot.

16 “Under the date of 16 February 1895 he writes without further elaboration: “I am willing to state that the names of the Three Nephites who do not sleep in the earth are Jeremiah, Zedekiah, and Kumenonhi.” Of course in 3 Nephi 28:25 Mormon reports that he was forbidden by the Lord to record the names of the three disciples, yet that limitation might not have been imposed on Joseph Smith or other early church leaders. Had Huntington heard this startling information from early associates of the Prophet? Without corroborating statements from other sources, we cannot know more” (Out of the Dust, Provo, Utah: Farms, 2000).

17 3 Nephi 29:8 What should be our attitude towards the Jews?
“Let us Latter-day Saints reach out to others not of our faith. Let us never act in a spirit of arrogance or with a holier-than-thou attitude. Rather may we show love and respect and helpfulness toward them… We can be more tolerant, more neighborly, more friendly, more of an example” (Gordon B. Hinckley, Ensign, May 2000, 87).

18 3 Nephi 30:2 How do Gentiles become members of the House of Israel?
“The effect of the Holy Ghost upon a Gentile, is to purge out the old blood, and make him actually of the seed of Abraham. That man that has none of the blood of Abraham (naturally) must have a new creation by the Holy Ghost” (Joseph Smith, Teachings, 150).
