Science with Arts Integration
In this arts integration science lesson students will investigate populations of dinosaurs and describe how evidence is used to determine an organisms prior existence. With arts integration students will construct fossilized dinosaurs, draw what they think a dinosaur looked like based on skeletal features and use clay to construct their own dinosaur.

Arts Integration When you enter into the arts integration phase of the lesson you and your students will construct fossilized dinosaurs, draw dinosaurs and construct dinosaurs from clay. Today we will go over making fossilized dinosaurs:

Materials Needed 8 Medium sized bowls.
1 large rectangular workspace table. 16 Cups of Baking Soda. 8 Cup-size measuring cups. 8 ½ Cup-size measuring cups. 1 Large cup of water. 8 Teaspoons. 1 Jar of instant coffee. 1 small plastic dinosaur for each student. Food Coloring (optional).

Model/Demonstrate Model for students each step of the process.
Step1: Measure 2 cups of baking soda into each of the bowls. Step 2: Add 2 teaspoons of water to each bowl stirring with your fingers. Step 3: Add ½ cup of coffee grounds to each bowl. Add food coloring if desired. Step 4: Have students dig in and get dirty!

Now The Fun Begins! Step 4: Students will knead the mixture into a dough-like substance.

Next They will flatten out a section of the dough in the palm of their hands adding a toy dinosaur in the middle.

Then Students will cover the dinosaur and shape the mixture into a “rock.”

Finally Place the rocks somewhere safe to dry for 24 hours.
Once the rocks have hardened continue with the remainder of your lesson allowing students to break open their “fossils” and classify their dinosaur inside.
