Scirtothrips dorsalis Chilli Thrips
Regulatory update Richard A. Clark – Chief Plant and Apiary Inspection Division of Plant Industry This presentation is the one used for our citrus greening survey personnel. Each time we go, we have a core of folks from the CAPS program that have done the survey several times, as well as local DPI inspectors, DPI and Federal fruit fly trappers, and citrus canker inspectors. Everyone receives the training the first day before we leave. It takes about an hour.

Scirtothrips dorsalis: was recently detected on October 14, Scirtothrips dorsalis has been known to occur in Hawaii since 1987, and there were previous detections in Florida in 1991 and 1994, however FDACS has had no detections in the intervening years. It was detected at a residential property located in Palm Beach county, Florida. The host was Rosa sp.

Scirtothrips dorsalis is considered a serious plant pest of quarantine significance. When detected in retail garden centers or commercial nurseries, all infested nursery stock will be quarantined until the pest has been eliminated. Quarantine treatments will involve applying University of Florida/IFAS pesticide recommendations for controlling Chilli trips on ornamentals.
