2 What is IPM? Environmentally sensitive approach to pest management
Relies on combination of common-sense practices Can be applied to both agriculture and non-agriculture

3 How does it work? Set Action Thresholds Monitor and Identify Pests
Pest populations or environmental conditions indicate that pest control action must be taken Monitor and Identify Pests IPM programs work to monitor pests and identify them accurately (harmful or not) Prevention Programs workto prevent pests on the crops, lawn, or indoor space These control methods are very effective, cost-efficient, and are little to no risk to people or enviornment

4 How does it work? 4. Control
IPM programs evaluate the proper control method for effectiveness and risk Lessrisky pest controls are chosen first then highly targeted chemicals are used Broadcasting spray of pesticides is a always a last resort

5 Why are pesticides so bad?
The chemicals in pesticides remain active long after they have done their job in your garden. When pesticides are applied, they get into our oil, air, and water reserves. Pesticides near water sources can harm aquatic life and destroy natural ecosystems Toxic substances in pesticide sprays cause health problems from skin irritation to cancer They kill beneficial organisms too Pests exposed to excessive pesticides can build up resistance over time
