Y8 Revision Sheet –Weather 4. Areas of independent revision. Do you know how to read a weather forecast? Do you know what all of the symbols mean? Which instruments do we use to measure our weather? What are the three different types of rainfall? How do they all differ? What are the 5 main air masses that affect the UK? What are the 5 main influences on our climate in the UK? What are the main climate zones around the world? Why are they so different everywhere? 1. You must learn the following key words and their definitions: 2. Learn your diagram on how clouds/rain form. Weather Day to day atmospheric conditions. Climate Average atmospheric conditions over a long period of time. Low Air Pressure Less air is pressing on the Earth’s surface. High Air Pressure More air is pressing down on the Earth’s surface. Air Mass A large block of air with particular characteristics. Altitude The height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level. Wind Speed The speed of the wind. Precipitation Includes rainfall/snowfall/sleet/hail. Temperature How hot or cold the air is. Meteorologist A scientist who specialises in studying the weather. Depression A system of low air pressure. 3. Remembering how to compare climate graphs. Compare max. and min. temperatures of two places. Compare max. and min. rainfall of two places. Explain how they are different or similar. Back your points up with data (numbers).

Extended Writing – 9 marks + 3 SPaG
Remember that your final question is always an extended writing piece and these are always worth the most marks! You will be given several sources and a question about climate zones around the world. To what extent - I agree to some extent… I agree a little…I agree a lot… In this box, you must list how you will write your answer following the correct structure. I have given you the first part, can you complete the rest? Paragraph 1. Introduce your answer. Can you throw back the question? What is it you will be talking about? Paragraph 2. Paragraph 3. Paragraph 4. In order to challenge myself and receive full marks I must: 1. Balance my answer with 2 view points (I agree a lot/I don’t agree at all because…) 2. 3. 4.
