Hook Activity On your note card write down five items that you would take with you if you had to flee your home to another place. Share these with your shoulder partner.

Read the article silently While reading highlight or underline the reasons why refugees are fleeing their homes Share these examples with your partner

Documentary: Another Kind of Girl
While watching the documentary write responses to the following questions: What did see you see that would be challenging living in a refugee camp? What did you see that surprised you about living in a refugee camp? What’s it like living in a refugee camp? Provide examples from the video to support your answer.

The Refugee Journey Make a list of the types of experiences refugees may face as they travel. Think about both physical and emotional experiences they may have As we listen to the story doing both of the following: Check off any of the experiences from your list you hear about Add to your list any experiences you hear that are not on your list We will pause about half way through to process best-policy-syrian-refugee-recalls-journey-to-greece

Questioning Write as many questions as you can in the time allotted.

Use the two maps to make a claim for AND against letting refugees into Europe. Make sure they can be supported by evidence on the maps.

Can Europe afford refugees?
Caring for the basic needs of a refugee in Europe costs at least ten times as much as in countries neighbouring Syria. Whereas a budget of $3,000 per refugee in Jordan would provide not just basic food and water but also education and opportunity, this will cost over $30,000 per refugee in Germany or Austria.

Taking Informed Action (OPTIONAL)
Research how we deal with refugees in the U.S./ Nevada/ Reno that have or still do cause controversy. Lay out different sides of the argument. Discuss the refugee controversy with an adult and interview them for their perspective on the controversy. Research others issues refugees fleeing to Europe face. Contact an organization that works with refugees and find out how you &/ or McQueen can get involved to help. Share your cause on two social media platforms. Research how we deal with refugees in America/ Nevada/ Reno. Based on how you believe the controversy over the refugee crisis should be handled, write a letter or to a government official and publish your letter openly on social media.
