Oracle Backup Can Be One of the Hardest Jobs
Careful orchestration Complex infrastructure Poor visibility Build and maintain scripts Multiple versions/ RMAN catalogs Analyze and secure backups Design log and data SLAs Size storage with disk and tape Meet compliance and legal reqs The database administrator handles a lot of difficult tasks. And backup might be the hardest. Many DBAs have war stories about managing convoluted backup jobs. Some may have horror stories about trying to restore from incomplete, corrupted, or even absent backups. There are so many complicated pieces in play. They need to write scripts to build a standard process, design multiple SLAs, work with many versions and schemas, manage storage, analyze performance bottlenecks, and meet compliance requirements. Orchestration is hard, the infrastructure is complex, and there are plenty of people to answer to should things go wrong. It’s not easy. [Speaker note: feel free to emphasize one or two of the six topics listed.]

Who Controls Oracle Database Backup and Recovery?
Database Administrator (DBA) Deep Oracle knowledge Well trained for Oracle backup/recovery Backup Administrator Lack of Oracle knowledge Challenged by Oracle backup complexities Self Managing Volume #1 Self Managing Volume #2 The rule of thumb: the larger the environment, the more likely the Oracle DBA controls backup. DBAs have deep understanding of their mission-critical application data and are well trained to do backup and recovery. They often build an end-to-end standard process to reduce human errors. They are usually the control freaks. They don’t trust backup admins because backup admins often don’t have the deep knowledge on database. Often times backup admins are happy to hand off that workload as well as they may not have know Oracle very well and find Oracle backup challenging. In smaller environments, sometimes DBAs are contractors, and sometimes DBAs are too busy with other things and willing to offload backup/recovery to backup admins. In those cases, it’s important for backup admins to control the application backup process but they do have a steep learning curve to master all aspects of Oracle backup such as archive logs and datafiles.

Oracle Auto Protection and LiveMount
Auto Discover: Install Rubrik Connector on Oracle host or RAC nodes, Rubrik discovers instances and databases automatically Select and assign SLA: Simply select database(s) and assign to an SLA. Auto Protect: Assign SLAs at parent level (e.g. Oracle host) and protect all databases underneath Replicate/Archive: SLA policy drives automated & secure replication and/or archival. Recover: Select database or tablespace and recover Instant Recovery and Live Mount: Achieve near zero RTO, use for Test/Dev Database Instances Rubrik Initiated Backup & Restore Database #1 Policy Automation Discovery, Backup, Replication, Archival Database #2 Channel #1 Channel #2 Channel #1 Channel #2 NFS Volumes Self Managing Volume #1 Self Managing Volume #2

Rubrik Makes One of the Hardest Jobs Easier
Simpler job automation Simpler granular restores Simpler data management Go from manual scripts to API-driven policies Live mount data to perform faster restores Get a single pane of glass that works across all apps Rubrik was built to make this difficult task simpler. We approach it with three goals in mind: to simplify job automation, to simplify difficult restores, and to simplify day to day management. The different approach applies to both backup and recovery. Our goal was to minimize the amount of time spent manually running jobs, writing scripts, and fighting legacy software. On top of simplicity, Rubrik provides much faster live mount options for both DBAs and backup admins. They could perform instant recovery and provision thin versions for developers to live mount for test/dev. And for the day-to-day tasks, Rubrik offers a single pane of glass to manage all applications, with auto discovery and auto protection for Oracle and SQL, as well as instant recovery and live migration. You don’t have to drastically change the way you work on backups. You just get to work less.
