1 If…then… phrases using: imparfait & conditionnel

2 When you want to say an “if…then…” phrase, you need to consider which tenses to use when writing the verbs. In English and in French, we use similar tenses for these types of phrases: If I had a million dollars, I would buy a plane.

3 If I had a million dollars, I would buy a plane.
The verb “had” will be conjugated using the imparfait tense while the verb “would buy” will be conjugated using the conditionnel: Si j’avais un million de dollars, j’achèterais un avion.

4 Maintenant, traduisez les phrases du BD en anglais :
Have students translate the comic strip phrases into English (on their worksheets) – they may use dictionaries if necessary. Ensure all students have written translations before moving on the next slide.

5 I would buy an apartment.
If I had a lot of money, There are 5 parts to the comic strip students needed to translate. Have students make corrections on their papers before moving on through each of the answer slides. I would buy an apartment.

6 If I bought an apartment,
I would live there with a friend.

7 If I lived there with a friend,
we would have a lot of visitors.

8 If we had a lot of visitors,
we would make quite a bit of noise.

9 finally… I would do better to buy myself a house…

10 Les superstitions si… There are different ways to express the “if…then…” phrases. This will help you review the one you just learned: Si…imparfait  conditionnel …and the one you learned earlier this year: Si…présent  futur

11 Directions: for each of the sentences on the “Superstitions” worksheet, underline the verb in the present tense and then verb in the future tense. On the blanks write the following: the English translation of the original sentence. the original sentence in French but change the “présent” tense verb to the “imparfait” and then change the “futur” tense verb to the “conditionnel”. The English translation of the modified sentence from line B This is the English translation of the directions the students see on their “Superstitions” worksheets. Students may use their notes and dictionaries but they are to work individually. Ensure the students have completed the activity (no blanks) before moving on to the next slide. Don’t have the “imparfait” memorized yet? The center section of the dictionary has verb tables
