“I Am the Bread of Life”
2
The Setting (John 6:1-34) Feeding the Five Thousand (6:1-14)
Questioning That Jesus Is “The Prophet” (6:22-34) The day after feeding the 5,000, the multitudes came seeking Jesus in Capernaum (6:22-25) The seekers were more interested in the results of the signs than they were about the signs and their purpose (6:26) Jesus began to contrast “food which perishes” with “the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you” (6:27) The multitude questions how Jesus can give any food better than Moses (6:30-31) Jesus again turns attention from an earthly bread to a heavenly bread (6:32-34)

The Saying (6: :60-69) Jesus makes a bold, Messianic claim: “I am the bread of life” (6:35, 41, 48, 51) God has always provided bread to sustain the physical lives of His people (Ex. 16; Num. 11; Psa. 78:24; 1 Kgs. 17:8-24; John 6:1-14; Matt. 6:11; 7:7-11) In Jesus, God was providing a spiritual bread to sustain the spiritual lives of His people This “spiritual bread” is imperishable (6:49-50) This “spiritual bread” satisfies completely (6:35) This “spiritual bread” alone imparts spiritual life (6:33) This “spiritual bread” is eternal (6:27) Jesus is “the bread of life” in two respects: The bread that Jesus gives is His life/flesh (6:51) Jesus gave words that “are life” (6:63)

The Significance Jesus, “The Bread of Life,” Calls Me to Action
“Come to Jesus” (6:35), acknowledging Him as the Messiah (cf. v. 37a, 37b, 44, 45, 65) “Believe in Jesus” (6:35), trusting and complying wholeheartedly with His will (cf. v. 40, 47) “Feed on Jesus” (6:57), receiving and accepting His teaching, obeying His will, digesting the message of God Like Ezekiel (2:4-3:3) and John (Rev. 10:9-11) = Feed on His Word! “Labor…for the food which endures to everlasting life” (6:27) Follow the example of Jesus: Don’t seek to do own will, but the will of God (6:38; Matt. 7:21)

The Significance Jesus, “The Bread of Life,” Promises Me Bountiful Blessings “Shall never hunger” (6:35) = satisfied “Shall never thirst” (6:35) “I will by no means cast out” (6:37) “I will raise him up at the last day” (6:39, 40, 44, 54) “Have everlasting life” (6:40, 47, 54) “Not die” (6:50) “Live forever” (6:51) “Will live” (6:57) “Abides in Me and I in him” (6:56)
