3. No Taxation Without Representation!
Parliament approved a tax law that put taxes on paper items:
Newspapers
Legal Documents
Playing Cards
Facts:
Many people in colonies were furious that the British were taxing them and they spoke out.
People committed treason
In 1766 the Stamp Act was Repealed

4. Townshend Act: 1767 Taxed Imports: Glass Tea Paint Paper
Parliament set up a new group of tax collectors.
Taxed Imports:

Believed they had the right to make laws for the colonists.
Colonists Boycotted:
Daughters of Liberty asked people to stop drinking British Tea.
Merchants in Boston wouldn’t import taxed goods.
People didn’t paint their houses.
1770: Parliament repealed all of the Townshend Acts EXCEPT FOR THE TEA…

5. Loyalist Redcoat Lobster
Colonists gathered near the British soldiers near the Old State House.
They shouted at the soldiers and threw rocks and snowballs at them.
Soldiers opened fire and 5 colonists were killed.

6. Boston Tea Party: 1773 East India Company had a monopoly on tea.
The Tea Act was passed by Parliament in 1773
East India Company had a monopoly on tea.
(A monopoly gives complete control over a good or service.)

Colonies Boycotted Tea:
Colonists HAD to buy their tea from the East India Company.
Some decided not to buy, others made their own from local sassafras trees.

7. Would You Like a Cup of Tea?
November ships reach Boston’s Harbor.
December 16th, 150 members of the Sons of Liberty dressed as members of the Mohawk tribe.
They broke open 300 chests of tea and threw them into the harbor.
