What are the five themes?
They are: Tools that geographer’s use to study the features of earth. Location Place Movement Region Human Environment Interaction

Location Describes where places are at on the earth.
Two types of Location: ABSOLUTE: exact location on earth (never changes!) RELATIVE: compared to other places (can change depending on what you are comparing)

Absolute Location Types: Examples: Rome is located at 41 N, 12 E
Latitude/Longitude Global “Address” Examples: Rome is located at 41 N, 12 E Ecuador is located in Tropic of Cancer.

Relative Location Examples:
Libya is located near the Mediterranean Sea. Iraq is near Syria. Egypt is south of Israel. Greenfield is east of Indianapolis.

Place A place is defined by it’s unique characteristics.
Physical characteristics Cultural characteristics

Physical Characteristics
The way a place looks. Created by nature. Mountains Rivers, Lakes, Seas Climate (what’s the weather like?) Vegetation (trees, bushes, flowers) Examples: The Himalaya Mountains are in Asia. The Nile River flows through Egypt.

Cultural Characteristics
People’s activities change the way a place looks or is represented. Man-made or invented. Language Religious Practices Celebrations/traditions/holidays Examples: Mandarin is the official language of China. Many Indians are Hindu. The Queen’s birthday is a national holiday in Australia.

Movement Places do not exist in isolation (alone). Examples
People, goods & ideas move from place to place. Examples Immigration (people moving) from Latin America to US. War in Iraq (troops, supplies, ideas, people) Twitter, Facebook, Instagram (ideas)

Region The world is divided into different regions based upon similarities & differences. Climate (similar weather patterns) Location (where they are in the world) Beliefs (religious, cultural) Languages

HEI The environment & people are connected.
Consequences to those actions depend on how people choose to interact with the world and use their resources. Can Be: Positive/Negative Intentional/Accidental Favorable/Destructive

Assignment “What does each theme look like?”
Use the magazines provided to visually represent one of the fives themes of geography. You can draw or trace the pictures onto your poster. You may ONLY use words to label your collage. Be creative, and thoughtful!
