2 Quick Pre-test Let’s go over this as a class; see how many questions ya’ll get right! I KNOW you have covered this in history classes

3 Activator Analyze these two quotes and tell me what they mean:
- “It was the best of times; It was the worst of times…” -"The parties were bigger. The pace was faster. The shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser, the liquor was cheaper"

4 Work session Here is a powerpoint that cover the 20’s and Gatsby’s life

5 Closing HOT SEAT!!! Someone come up and tell me what you learned about Gatsby or the 20’s

6 Introduction to the setting of Gatsby
Target: -Students will be able to define the stereotypical American dream and what they hope to learn about it -Students will be able to identify their own American dream -Students will be able to analyze a poem for characteristics of the American dream -Students will be able to write a poem that shows their identity in terms of background and culture

7 Activator Gatsby Journal 1:
List 6 characteristics that you think of when you hear the phrase “The American Dream”. Where have you heard these characteristics, and why do they fit under this phrase?

8 Class discussion How would you define “America”?
What comes to mind when you think of “dream”? What historical figures or documents could have influenced the American dream? -What comes to your mind when you think of the future?

9 Where I’m From Pass out the poem “Where I'm From” By, George Ella Lyon. Discussion: The author is defining his identity based on memories, family traditions and culture. How does the author identify himself? How does he explain the setting? What senses did he refer to while writing this poem? Identity influences a person’s American dream. What do you predict to be George's American dream?

10 Closing Develop your own WIF poem THESE ARE DUE TOMORROW!!! 

12 Activator Gatsby Journal 2:
Prompt: The idea of the American dream has changed throughout history with new inventions, technology, etc. My American dream is different than my parents dream and your dream. How is your American dream different from that of your parents? What is your American dream?

14 Work Session -“The Pursuit of Happiness” movie trailer
Discussion: Will Smith's character starts with very little and works to pursue his American dream through education and love for his son. Do you believe everyone, even the homeless, can have an American dream? What does this tell you about the American dream?

15 Project No you are going to come up with a situation that has to do with chasing the American dream. Don’t let the other groups know what each group is doing. They need to include: Setting, characters, and scene for portraying the situations -Groups then perform and the audience has to respond by guessing what the characters were in pursuit of.

20 Work Session Lyric Project!
People often express their current situation or feelings in songs. Listen to “We Shall Be Free” and “Pink Houses -Pass out the lyrics sheet. As a group, you are to analyze the song lyrics for 2 of the songs (that I decided) -What is the American dream like for this person? -What characteristics are used to describe the American dream? -Is it similar to or different from your American dream? NEED EXAMPLES THAT PROVE AMERICAN DREAM

21 Discussion The American dream is different for everyone. Did any of the songs show you a different version of the American dream that you hadn't thought about? Do you believe the songs showed the inconsistency of the American dream? How does a person cope with dreams that aren't achieved? Why do you think artist wrote songs about their dreams? Where they just their dreams or the dreams they thought the American people should have? What if you don’t achieve your dream, how do you cope?
