2. 1765 stamp act a direct tax paid directly to the government
required that all printed material (newspapers, shipping documents, playing cards) must bear a stamp to show that a tax had been paid to Gr. Britain.
money collected was to be used to help pay the costs of defending & protecting the American frontier near the Appalachian Mountains

3. 1765 stamp act
Colonists were opposed arguing that their natural rights were being violated
“No Taxation without Representation”
Colonists claimed that they did not elect representatives to the British Parliament &, therefore, could not be taxed.
Only colonial assemblies could impose taxes within the colonies

4. 1765 stamp act Protests & petitions
Sons of Liberty : American patriots who attacked symbols of British authority & power before the American Revolution
Riots, burned stamps in the streets, destroyed stamp collectors offices, tarred & feathered British supporters

6. 1773 BOSTON TEA PARTY
In 1773 the British gvt passed a law that gave the British East India Co the ability to sell tea in the colonies without paying tax
This damaged the businesses of local merchants
Boston colonists disguised as Native Americans, the colonists dumped wooden chests of tea into Boston Harbor.
British responded by closing the Port of Boston

7. 1st Continental Congress
On Sept 5, 1774, 56 colonial delegates met in Philadelphia at the First Continental Congress
first time that leaders from different colonies had met face to face
resolved that the colonies should have the right to make laws in the colonies
In every colony a volunteer army was organized and weapons collected

8. American Revolution
The official start of the American Revolution occurred in April 1775 at the Battles of Lexington and Concord
The Second Continental Congress convened shortly thereafter to raise an army and organize for battle
George Washington was chosen as the commander

9. Americans win independence
Success for the Colonists
Despite British military might, colonists have advantages:
Motivating cause of freedom
French assistance
War’s expense for Britain
British surrender at Yorktown in 1781; colonists win the war

Declaration of Independence—document justifying colonial rebellion
Leader Thomas Jefferson writes Declaration, uses ideas of John Locke

A Weak National Government
Articles of Confederation set government plan for new republic
Articles create legislature only, no executive or judicial branches
Result is weak national government that fails to provide unity and order

13. AMERICA CREATES A REPUBLIC
A New Constitution
Leaders call Constitutional Convention in 1787 to revise articles
Group instead creates a new government under U.S. Constitution
Constitution contains many political ideas of the Enlightenment

The Federal System
Constitution creates three branches of government
Provides checks and balances—ensures branches share power equally
Promotes federal system—power divided between nation and states
