1. Northwestern Lehigh School District 1:1 Laptop Initiative

2. With the support of the NWLSD School Board and District Administration, each student in grades 9-12 will have daily access to an 11” MacBook Air to be used for academic purposes throughout the school day
Each student will also receive a school-issued carrying case →
This case must be used to carry the school-issued laptop at all times
This case has a reinforced handle that will allow students to hang his/her laptop in school-issued lockers when the laptop is not being used
Do NOT place your laptop/case on the floor of your school locker

3. Options for Student Laptop Use
Option #1 - School day use of laptop ONLY
School-issued laptops will be housed and charged in Room 106 of the HS
Students will report to Room 106 each day before Block 1 to pick up his/her laptop & case and after Block 4 to return his/her laptop & case
Students and their parents must complete “Laptop Agreement Version B” (as found on the HS website) and turn it into the HS (beginning on the first day of school) before being granted the use of his/her laptop

4. Options for Student Laptop Use
Option #2- Take Home use of laptop
School-issued laptops will be taken home with your student at the end of each school day
Students will be responsible for bringing his/her fully-charged laptop to school each day
Students will be allowed to use the school-issued laptop, during non-school hours, for personal use
Students and their parents must complete “Laptop Agreement Version A” (as found on the HS website) and pay a $50 insurance premium

6. Things to Remember...
As with all property of the NWLSD, the use of school-issued laptop computers, chargers, and carrying cases is to be considered a privilege
Students are expected to take excellent care of his/her laptop at all times
Every student at NWLHS will have access to their own laptop, therefore, students should NEVER share his/her laptop with another student
All laptop computers are on loan to students as a learning tool, however, take-home privileges will be revoked should students use or treat the laptop inappropriately

7. Things to Remember...
During school hours (7:45-2:37) laptop computers are to be used for educational purposes only
Students who choose the Take-Home option may use his/her school-issued laptop for personal reasons after school hours (social media, music, games, etc.)
Laptops that are taken home do have filtering software on them that is designed to filter out specific pornographic, hostile, terroristic, and/or weapons-related content

8. Things to Remember...
The school-issued carrying case must be used for all transport of your laptop
To and from school (as applicable)
Between classes
Students should shut down and restart the computer at least daily
This will help to reset your laptop and all of its programs and will cut down on future laptop issues
Student identification labels are not to be removed from the carrying case, laptop, and charger
Treat the laptop computer like a visible pile of cash. Laptop computers are very attractive targets to thieves. Never leave the laptop computer unsecured or unattended. All students are responsible for their own laptop computer at all times.
Never force a connector into a port. When connecting a device, make sure the port is free of debris and the device cable matches the port. Take care to position the connector in relation to the port. When plugging the charger into an electrical outlet, connect to the outlet first, then connect the MagSafe connector to the laptop computer. When unplugging the charger, disconnect the MagSafe connector first, then unplug the charger from the outlet. Following this order will eliminate potential sparking. Always pull the plug, not the charger cord.
When storing the  laptop computer in the sleeve, make certain there are no loose items such as paper clips or coins that could get caught inside the optical drive slot. Keep metal or magnetic items away from the MagSafe power port.
Use two hands to move or hold the laptop computer. Close the lid prior to moving or carrying the laptop computer. If the laptop computer drops, the screen, and possibly more, will likely break.
Put the laptop computer in sleep mode when carrying it from class to class during the school day. When logging out, be certain to wait for the login screen to appear. Make certain the hard drive is not spinning before you place the laptop computer in its sleeve. Shut down the laptop computer before carrying it for any length of time or distance. For example, shut the laptop computer down at the end of the day before going home or to an after-school activity. This will prevent the laptop computer from overheating in the sleeve.
Shut down and restart the laptop computer at least daily. This will allow the laptop computer to run internal checks and maintenance routines.
Identification labels located on the top and bottom of the laptop should not be removed. Stickers or any kind of writing are not permitted on the laptop computer or sleeve. Laptop covers and skins are permitted. The laptop computer must be returned to the school in the same condition it was received, except normal wear and tear, as determined by the District.
Students should save all work locally to Google Drive (part of Falcon Apps). It is the student’s responsibility to back-up critical files to Google Drive. Large files such as video, photos and music should not be stored on Google Drive. Use storage media such as thumb-drives or CDs for larger files and projects.
Be sure the computer is fully charged before arriving at school each day. Failure to charge the laptop computer is equivalent to not being prepared for class. The amount of work the battery can provide during the day depends on the applications and peripheral devices being used. It is also helpful to conserve battery power. The following suggestions will help with battery conservation:
Disconnect peripherals when not in use.
Quit open applications when not in use.
Remove CD and DVD discs when not in use.
Reduce screen brightness when using only battery power.
Put the laptop computer into sleep mode whenever not in use.

If a laptop computer is not functioning properly, please contact your school’s Computer Technician.
Most USB home printers are compatible with student laptop computers. A list of compatible printers is available on the Apple Support Site. Laptop computers are preloaded with printer driver software. Plug in the printer and select the printer using the File > Print menu in any application. If you are having trouble connecting your home printer using USB or wirelessly, please contact your computer technician.

9. Laptop Guidelines
Students may not use the laptops on buses or in automobiles
If the student is unable to carry and/or supervise his/her laptop, it is to be hung and locked in the student’s school-issued locker
Stickers are not allowed on the school-issued carrying cases or on the machine itself
Students who attach a hard case to his/her laptop may appropriately decorate the hard case
Food and drink should not be used near the laptop

10. Student Responsibility
Students must remember that the laptop is to always be handled with care
It is the responsibility of the student to maintain the excellent condition of the computer throughout the year
Students are expected to return the laptop each year in the same condition as it was received, except for normal wear and tear

11. Student Responsibility
Student laptops will be collected by the district at the end of each school year
It is recommended (not required) that students put a hard case on his/her school- issued laptop
Students will use the same laptop computer in each school year that they attend NWLHS

12. Student Responsibility
Students MUST bring his/her fully-charged laptop to school each day
Failure to bring the laptop to school and/or have a full charge is equivalent to not being prepared for class
Loaner laptops will NOT be provided to students who forget to bring his/her laptop to school
Students who forget his/her laptop at home will still be responsible for any technology-based work that is missed in his/her classes

13. Insurance Premium Required for Option #2 (Take Home Use)

Insurance premium - $50 (paid at distribution)
Tiered Deductibles for damage & loss
$50 for 1st incident of damage
$75 for 2nd incident of damage
$90 for 3rd incident of damage
$250 for loss or theft / incident

14. What to do if something is not working?
If a laptop needs repair or maintenance, students can submit a tech request via
Students may take their laptops to the Tech Support Office (Room 106) for cleaning of the track pad and/or screen during Tech Office hours
