Lesson 3-4 Graphing Functions
Obj: The student will be able to 1) Graph functions given a limited domain 2) Graph functions given a domain of all real numbers HWK: p all, all, 44
2
Graph each function for the given domain
Ex 1) - x + 2y = 6 D={ -4, -2, 0, 2} a) solve for y b) table of values
3
Ex 2) f(x) = | x | D = { -2, -1, 0, 1, 2} a) Table of values
4
If a domain is not given, assume that the domain is all real numbers
Steps: Graphing Functions using a domain of all real numbers. 1) Use function to generate ordered pairs by choosing several values of x 2) Plot enough points to see a pattern for the graph 3) Connect the points with a line or smooth curve
5
Graph each function Ex 3) 2x + 1 = y a) table of values b)
6
Ex 4) y = x² a) table of values b)
7
Ex 5) y = | x – 1 | a) table of values b)
8
Use the graph of the function f(x) = 1 3 x + 2
Ex 6) Find the value of f(x) when x = 6. Check your answer Ex 7) Find the value of f(x) when x = 3. Check your answer.
9
Understand the problem – what are you asked to do?
Ex 8) The function y = 2.5x describes how many millimeters sea level y rises in x years. Graph the function. Use the graph to estimate how many millimeters the sea level will rise in 3.5 years. Understand the problem – what are you asked to do? Make a plan – What values should I use? Solve Look back – make sure it makes sense
