The life cycle of flowering plants
-aka Angiosperms

Flowering

2. Pollination Anything that can take the pollen and drop it on the stigma of another flower or the same flower. ants, bats, bees, beetles, birds, butterflies, flies, moths, wasps, lemurs, possums, lizards wind and water The bee is responsible for the spreading of more pollen than any other insect. By pollinating plants, insects help plants reproduce and create a greater diversity of plant life on our planet.

What am I?

3. Fertilization Male Gamete Female Gamete Type of Union
Result of Union Final Result Plants pollen ovule (egg) pollination single cell zygote multi-cell embryo (in seed) Animals sperm egg fertilization
7
4. Fructification Seeds are live embryos. The length of time a seed is able to stay alive varies according to the environmental conditions. Fruits are growing ovaries. The ovary grows to protect the seed until it is considered ripe.
8
which is the fruit ? (ovary):must contain seeds
Carrot or zucchini? Zucchini (has seeds) The carrot is part of the roots
9
which is the fruit ? (ovary):must contain seeds
Rhubarb or tomato? Tomato! (has seeds) Rhubarb is the stalk of the plant
10
which is the fruit ? (ovary):must contain seeds
Strawberry or sandspur ? Sandspur (contains seeds) Strawberry is swollen stem of plant that holds many ovaries(tiny seeds are fruit)
11
which is the fruit ? (ovary):must contain seeds
jalapeno peppers or kale jalapeno peppers (have seeds) Kale is the leaves of the plant
12
which is the fruit ? (ovary):must contain seeds
nectarine or bananas? nectarine! (had a seed - the pit) commericial Bananas are bred not to have seeds (like seedless grapes) Wild bananas would have seeds inside.
13
which is the fruit ? (ovary):must contain seeds
dandellion fluff or raspberries Dandellion fluff! has seeds! Raspberries are like strawberries - only the tiny seed is the fruit, the rest is part of the plant

5. Germination Germination is the transition period from a seed into a new plant. Germination Requirements: proper temperature the presence of adequate water Nutrients light
15
germination: interesting facts
An inhibitor of germination called abscisic acid needs to be broken down for germination to occur. This breakdown usually occurs at low temperatures, once it is all broken down germination begins. This prevents germination during the winter, when plants will most likely not survive. This period is called dormancy.
