Bacterial STD’s Chlamydia: Gonorrhea most common STD in US
2011: 1.4 million reported cases in the US May not show symptoms (discharge, burning/pain during urination) Gonorrhea One of the most common 2011: 322,000 in US

Bacterial STD’s Syphilis:
symptoms develop in multiple stages; take 1-12 weeks to appear in the 4th stage, blindness, liver and brain damage, and heart disease develop

Viral HPV (human papillomavirus aka genital warts)
Most common STD in the US! At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire a genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have been infected with genital HPV infection. Symptoms: small painless bump or group of bumps (large or small) in the genital area; can be asymptomatic Can cause cervical cancer or cancer of the penis

Viral Herpes Hepatitis B
1 in 4 adults have herpes (oral & genital combined) Mild tingling + burning precedes blister Blister lesion (2-6 weeks); painful Can take medication to reduce outbreaks (Valtrex; Acyclovir) Resides deep in nerve centers Hepatitis B Half are asymptomatic Symptoms are similar to flu Fatigue Jaundice Dark colored urine/light colored stool
