Northwest Hospital Childbirth Center Planning

WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S SERVICE LINE
The Women’s and Children’s service line is a strategic growth area for UW Medicine including Northwest Hospital (NWH). NWH, as a community hospital, is an ideal setting for low risk deliveries. Northwest Hospital’s service area is shifting to a younger patient population. Millennials are one of the fastest growing populations in the region, and are moving outside of Seattle’s core to areas including Northwest Hospital’s service area. The Women’s and Children’s service line brings in younger patient population, with the potential to retain for future medical services as women are often the healthcare decision- makers for their household. Renovating the NWH CBC supports UW Medicine service line growth strategies. Northwest Hospital Childbirth Center RFQ Attachment 5.d

NWH CHILDBIRTH CENTER - CHALLENGES
Childbirth volumes have not grown in the last 5 years; 15 years ago NWH was a destination childbirth center in North Seattle. The market competition has significantly invested in childbirth centers. High patient satisfaction scores around nursing and physicians; however, multiple patient comments/concerns about age of the facility and lack of amenities. Age and size of the current facility does not support strategic plan for growth. Northwest Hospital Childbirth Center RFQ Attachment 5.d

NWH CHILDBIRTH CENTER - PATIENT COMMENTS FROM PRESS GANEY SURVEY
“The childbirth center REALLY needs a 24-hr. entrance... Women have many choices for where to give birth in Seattle and if you want NWH to be the choice for women in north Seattle making the access point more comfortable for women in labor would go a long way.” “Overall, we would have another baby at Northwest but it would be great to see some major updates in the room.” Northwest Hospital Childbirth Center RFQ Attachment 5.d

NWH CHILDBIRTH CENTER - facility Proposal
Relocate patient population from the CBC’s adjacent Surgical Specialty Unit (SSU) to other acute care space. SSU is currently set-up for 15 acute care beds SSU facility is not ideal for acute care in its current state No showers in patient rooms Air temperature control issues (HVAC needs to be replaced) Gut and renovate SSU and the adjacent two CBC wings to create a newly renovated 3 wing CBC with an increased footprint of ~1/3. Allows for expanded capacity from ~1800 births/yr. to ~2500 births/yr. All rooms updated to industry standards including amenities, aesthetics, size, etc. Better able to compete in the market. NWH CHILDBIRTH CENTER - RENOVATION ENHANCEMENTS
Dedicated exterior main entrance to the CBC (no dedicated main entrance today). Dedicated waiting area within the CBC (waiting area within open public corridor outside of the CBC today). Public corridor closed off from CBC (CBC wings connect via public corridor today). Centrally located communication hub / nursing station within the CBC (located within open public corridor outside of CBC today). Implementing a Labor Delivery Recover (LDR) model vs Labor Delivery Recovery Postpartum (LDRP) model that exists today to enhance efficiency and ensure maximum patient safety within the newly expanded footprint. Mom delivers in a larger room within a wing dedicated and designed for laboring moms Mom and baby transition to an adjacent wing designed for their postpartum stay Addition of a new 4 bay OB Emergency Department within the labor wing that will facilitate triage and throughput. New c-section rooms located within the dedicated labor wing. Renovated Level II Special Care Nursery allowing for more privacy. Northwest Hospital Childbirth Center RFQ Attachment 5.d
