2018 Moose Membership Workshop Key Factors that Determine the Success of Lodge/Chapter Membership Efforts

3 Thank you for being here!
We know you could be somewhere else, but you care about the Moose

4 Goals Today Understand our members just a little bit better
Look at strategies and opportunities to recruit and retain members

5 Goals Today Examine issues that prevent us from achieving our goals
Re-energize each of you in the room today to help the Moose generate a “Plus 1” count for every lodge and chapter

6 End the Year with at least “1” more Active
Membership Goals End the Year with at least “1” more Active Target to Renew 80% How many lodges and chapters in this room anticipate reaching that goal? If not, why not?

7 Exercise One: As you listen to this presentation, think about the following question: In the short-term, what would you do specifically to grow the active membership of the Moose?

8 Name all of the elements that impact retention in our lodges today.
Issue One: Retention Name all of the elements that impact retention in our lodges today.

9 Here’s what we think: Have a plan – most don’t Where’s your committee?
Communications are the key Activities are the key (too!) Member Benefits Orientation!

10 Why Members Leave Former Member Survey Results
Issue One: Retention Why Members Leave Former Member Survey Results

11 Breakdown Issue One: Retention
Sent to 23,000 former members who had dropped their membership within the past 12 months Over 1,700 responses received, which extrapolates over a representative sample Respondents were asked a series of questions from “Why they joined” to “Why they quit”

12 Breakdown Issue One: Retention
Four categories were eliminated from this evaluation due to situations the lodge/chapter cannot control Never intended to join in the first place Too old/sick to continue my membership Moved to a location that did not have a lodge Could not afford to be a member any longer The last bullet differs from the response that was left in that stated “Value of belonging did not equal the cost of dues”

13 Breakdown Issue One: Retention
In general, those four responses elicited a more positive overall reply from former members as none of them reflected dissatisfaction with their entire Moose membership experience

14 What was the original reason you joined the Moose?

15 How often did you visit the lodge?

16 How active were you in the Moose?

17 What was the MAIN reason you did not continue your membership in the Moose?

18 What was your experience when you visited the lodge?

19 Describe the physical condition of your lodge?

20 Please describe your interaction with other members of the Moose

21 How would you rate communications from the lodge/chapter?

22 Did you take advantage of any Moose Member Benefit Programs?

23 Comments: “We never felt like we were a part of the lodge. No one ever took the time to really introduce us to the lodge and all the great charitable things going on. Its like they signed us up just to try to win some membership drive. Sadly, after going a few times and receiving the same treatment each time, we left and did not return.”

24 Comments: “The Moose is a "social club' run by old members who do not appreciate any changes or any "new" members who may be a "threat" to the way they run things.” “Very old crowd not trending to new, younger members.”

Issue Two: Production Your membership just became more valuable!

43 How will this program help you and the Moose?
Simply by doing things within the fraternity that contribute to its growth and success, you can be rewarded with items and experiences of specific value to you.

44 Moose Rewards The system identifies items that are currently entered by fraternal units, MI and members including, but not limited to, membership sponsoring, lodge positions held, training, etc.

45 Moose Rewards All Moose Rewards information can be accessed by logging on to You may also access the information via the Members Section of the MI website

46 Examples of how you can earn points:
Holding office at the lodge/chapter level Attaining a Higher Degree Attending an International Moose Convention Attaining training credit for lodge/chapter positions

47 Renewing your dues annually
Examples of how you can earn points: Renewing your dues annually Paying dues two or more years in advance of the due date Becoming a Life Member of the Fraternity Check the website

48 Why are some point totals so much higher than others?
Effective leadership at the local level is the biggest issue for the Moose, therefore it is awarded the highest number of points Expanding the number members who sign new members is critical to growth, so those points are high as well

49 Why are some point totals so much higher than others?
Our retention rate for first-year members is only 49%, so points are higher for renewals from years 1-to-2 Sponsors also receive more points for individuals who renew beyond their first year

50 Examples of items that you can redeem points for:
Annual Dues for your lodge, chapter or Moose Legion Registration for the International Moose Convention Contributions to Mooseheart and Moosehaven

51 Moose Rewards The Rewards Program is scheduled to run for five years. You may accumulate points the entire time and redeem some or all whenever you reach a desired level. Points are non-transferable You must be an active member to redeem your points
