3. Foreign Recognition-
If other countries see Texas as independent, then Mexico might follow
Recognition would lessen the possibility of new war w/ Mexico and might encourage immigration to Texas
Texas needed foreign trade and loans
Recognition by US might lead to annexation
Many Americans feared that recognizing Texas would lead to war w/ Mexico
Northern states were against slavery and did not want Texas to join US (Texas was a slave country and would be a slave state)
Andrew Jackson thought TX population was too small with too much debt and a powerful enemy (Mexico)

Americans were divided over annexation

South had agricultural economy and needed slavery
Many believed that it was the US’s Manifest Destiny to annex Texas and take over the continent of North America

Polk won election
Anson Jones (TX Pres.) presented offer from US to Texas Congress along with offer from Mexico to recognize independence
annexation was approved by voters
December 29th, 1845 US President Polk signed the Texas Admission’s Act. Texas became the 28th state to join the U.S.
