The Fifth Republic—Charles de Gaulle
Charles de Gaulle ( ) was a French general during World War II. After Germany conquered France in 1940, he fled to the United Kingdom. He became the leader of the French exile and stayed in contact with the French Resistance. On December 21, 1958, he was elected president of France: Reorganized the French constitution. Instituted the Fifth Republic of France

Established communications for the Allied war effort. Spied on German activity. Sometimes assassinated high-ranking German officers.

The Government of the fifth republic
France is a parliamentary republic. Government power is split between the president and the parliament. President serves a five-year term. The current president is Francois Hollande; he took office on May 15, 2012. President’s responsibilities: Guardian of the constitution. Ensures proper functioning of other authorities.

Parliament has two parts: Senate National Assembly President chooses the prime minister, who heads parliament and is responsible for the inner workings of the government. Government is very active in the country’s economy.

Centralized economy—after World War II
France was poor and needed rebuilding. Established National Planning Board: Founded by Jean Monnet in 1946 Launched a five-year plan to modernize France Set economic goals for the country Resulted in a mixed economy with both private and public sectors

Centralized economy—socialism
Socialism—An economic system in which some businesses and industries are controlled by the government. The government provides many health and welfare benefits, such as health care, housing, and unemployment insurance. French government is starting to place more control of the economy in private companies.

Energy Economy grew rapidly after 1946.
Industry was powered by coal, oil, and gas. Turned to nuclear energy in the 1980s so they would be less dependent upon oil. Draws about 75 percent of energy from nuclear energy. Uses nuclear energy more than any other country in the world.

Note: Although only 7 percent of the labor force works in agriculture, France exports more agricultural products than any other country in the European Community!

impressionism Edouard Manet ( ) created one of the most important art movements. Uses light to create an impression of a scene. Does not rely on a strictly realistic picture. Famous art collections: Musee d’Orsay Louvre
