9 Example Body #1: One way to combat the decrease in participation of the sport of wrestling, is by creating more excitement around the competition throughout communities. Initially, a very simple way to do this would be to change the time the events start, so that they are easier for students to attend. According to veteran Platt High School coach Brian McCarty, “Some things that could probably help recruiting could include dual meets starting at 3 p.m., so the student body can enjoy it” (Lipshez, 2017) What Coach McCarty is saying is that if students could just go right from the classroom to the gym, it would make it so that the challenge of getting a ride back to the school to attend the meet no longer an issue. Promoting rivalries is another great way to increase excitement for the sport because it gives a reason for spectators to care. NWCA executive director Mike Moyer states, “We have to create more crosstown meet rivalries in the spirit of making wrestling more relevant in the schools and communities across the country,” (Math, 2018) In other words Moyer believes that when school spirit is attached to the competition, the competition gains a relevant reason for the student bodies to care about the sport. Indeed, this type of exposure among the students and between districts is beneficial, and leads to more excitement, which can be seen and felt in the programs where the districts actively encourage these rivalries and those which make it easier for students to attend. T= Although the number of participants in the sport of wrestling is on the decline, various actions can be taken to combat the decline because the sport has so much to offer athletes and their communities. 1. Increase excitement 2. Dual meet start times 3. Quote (Flo wrestling) 4. Starting at 3:00 = more attendance 2. Promote Rivalries 3. Quote (NWCA) 4. School spirit attached 1. Exposure = interest

10 Example Body #2: Another way to combat the decrease in participation, is to highlight for parents of young children how the lessons learned competing on the mat mirror those in life. It is important to note, that in every wrestlers career, there is always someone who has come along and beaten them. If someone asks any one of them, they each will be able to recall some loss that devastatingly crushed them emotionally. In an interview, Jake Herbert, an Olympic gold medalist, recalled how a string of losses in high school led to a realization of his dreams to become a champion (Holmes, 2016) His story shows that after losing a wrestler learns more about themselves than anything. The most important is how to bounce back after they get knocked down. Also, the self discipline that wrestling can teach a young athlete transfers to every aspect of their life. One of the most decorated coaches and former participants Dan Gable, always talks about how the grind of wrestling teaches the athlete to make choices no matter how hard, this will benefit them in later in life. (Math, 2018) Gabel is refereeing to the persistence to follow a diet, to make weight, the ability to make choices about sleep habits, and the sacrifice of time with friends and family to achieve their goals are all things that can help build discipline and character. Most would agree, that by promoting how wrestling can help one to learn to overcome challenges and at an early age how to sacrifice in order to achieve success, will help to raise participation in youth programs across the country. T= Although the number of participants in the sport of wrestling is on the decline, various actions can be taken to combat the decline because the sport has so much to offer athletes and their communities. 1. Lessons 2. Pride 3. sum (Jake Herbert) 4. Humbled, Bounce back 2. Discipline 3. para(Dan Gable) 4. Self control 1. Making aware
