1 STAGES OF CONSCIENCE DEVELOPMENT…
Where are you?

2 JOURNAL QUESTION: What is your response to the Heinz dilemma? Don’t just tell me if it is right or wrong; give me an explanation for your answer…

3 6 STAGES OF MORAL DEVELOPMENT
This was developed by Lawrence Kohlberg He was a professor of education & psychology at Harvard University in the 1970’s There are three LEVELS of moral development with two STAGES for each level 3 X 2=6 stages A person progresses through these one by one; you cannot skip a stage…

4 I. THE PRE-CONVENTIONAL LEVEL
Obedience and Punishment Stage Individual and moral judgment is motivated by a need to avoid punishment Example: “I’ll do this because I want to stay out of trouble.” Personal Reward Stage What is right is what satisfies one’s own needs You follow rules to get personal rewards Example: “I’m number one. I look after me.”

5 II. THE CONVENTIONAL LEVEL
“Good boy/Nice girl” Stage Your moral judgment is motivated by a need to avoid rejection or disapproval from others. You conform to the expectations of others Example: “I’ll help that person out. Any good and decent person would.” Law and Order Stage Show respect for authorities because it maintains a good social order. Beginning to discern between good/bad authority. Example: “Without people doing their jobs, society wouldn’t function.”

6 III. THE POST-CONVENTIONAL LEVEL
Social Contract Stage Individual and moral judgment is motivated by community respect for all Motivated to live under laws that promote the common good. Example: “When an injustice is committed, it is best to work through the system to change it.” Universal, Ethical Stage Following a conscience that is directed at mutual respect and trust Example: “The law should be subordinate to higher moral principles.”
