Homework Practice Practice Review Think / Pair / Share Examine the Article Read the professionally written LEDEs Identify the “5 W’s” Who What When Where Why Identify the “H” Hook For example, the lead is about words, contains 5 W’s, a hook, etc. The middle contains the action, details of the story, quotes, etc. The end contains a quote, a finite ending, etc.

When to Use Each Hook Style
Contrast Hook- uses opposites and extremes to emphasize story’s main idea Use if the story shows conflict Use if the story shows 2 clear sides Really any story can use this… It’s the “go to” Picture Hook- uses words to paint a picture about main character use if story is about a single main character Background Hook- uses words to paint a picture about a location use if story is about a location or setting

When to Use Each Hook Style
Punch Hook- bold, extreme, in-your-face statement used to shock the reader Use if story is shocking, extreme, or exciting Direct Address Hook- speaks directly to the reader using words like “you” and “your” Use if story makes personal connection with the audience Quotation Hook- a bold quotation from an expert Provides weight, power, and legitimacy to a story Use if story is a about a topic that must be told from viewpoint of someone that lived it 1st person account
