What is Youth Offending
Crime committed by young people under 18 Criminal age of responsibility is 10years Mainly boys – approximately 90% Mainly in urban environments and areas of social deprivation Ethnic backgrounds tends to reflect the community make up of the location BME groups tend to be over represented

Types of offences and legal definitions
Property crime – theft, criminal damage, burglary, car crime Violent offences – weapon possession, Common assault ABH, GBH, affray Sexual offending – indecent assault, rape Drug offences – possession / possession with intent, importation – class A / B distinctions Offences tend to have aggravating or mitigating features

YOS functions – from arrest to sentence
Arrest – PACE and the role of the appropriate adult Pre Court diversion – Cautions and community resolutions with or without conditions Youth Court (Magistrates) or Crown Court attendance - bail conditions, remands to local authority accommodation and remands in custody Court reports - Sentencing and breach

Court sentences Financial penalties – fines and compensation - £50 - £1000 Absolute and Conditional discharge Referral order minimum 3 – maximum 12 months Youth Rehabilitation Order with requirements 6 months – 3 years Curfew orders DTO – minimum 4 maximum 24 months Section 91 – over 2 years imprisonment ( Crown Court )
