Do you realise that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids?
If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about ageing that you think in fractions.

'How old are you. ' 'I'm four and a half
'How old are you?' 'I'm four and a half!' You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back
You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

'How old are you?' 'I'm gonna be 16!' You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life You become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh,
what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're Just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70!
After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Thursday, November 08, 2018!

You get into your 80's and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30 ; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there Into the 90s, you start going backwards; 'I Was JUST 92.'

Then a strange thing happens.
If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. 'I'm 100 and a half!' May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG 1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay 'them' 2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever... Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.' And the devil's name is Alzheimer's. 4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud.
Laugh until you gasp for breath. 6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love ,
whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. 8.Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is. 10. Tell the people that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER : Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Learning We have the ability to learn-life long
Many learn differently as we age Older people require more time and effort to absorb new information As we age-we tend to avoid learning things that aren’t meaningful or rewarding

Memory Older people-tend to have trouble remembering some things.
Short term memory-(less than 30 minutes) worsens as we age Long-term memory also worsens. Most learn to adapt to changes in learning and memory. Think about things to remember them May avoid new and strange environments

Reaction Time As we age-we process information at a slower pace.Most is caused by changes in the Nervous system over time. We slow down even more with the increased difficulty of tasks.

Intelligence Hotly debated-does intelligence decline with age?
Though overall intelligence stays the same-many older people do poorer on standardized intelligence tests. Older people slow down with age-but make fewer mistakes. We value correctness with age. So may be slower to respond-answers=more accurate.

Stresses Common stresses for older people include the following:
diseases or health conditions, possibly chronic (eg, arthritis perceived loss of social status after retirement death of a spouse Stress often affects our physical health and can have an even stronger effect on our mental well-being. Too much stress can be associated with a number of psychological and physical conditions, such as anxiety, headaches, and ulcers.

Care-giving Chronic diseases and conditions affect most older adults.
Family members, especially spouses, are most often the caregivers. More than 44 million Americans (mostly women) care for family members of all ages.

Old Age Institutions Nursing Homes-full time medical care
Assisted Living-small apartments where elderly couples and individuals can live on their own with assistance.

Loss and Grief As we get older, the death of friends and family becomes more common. Losing and grieving for a spouse is one of the most traumatic situations commonly faced by older adults. More than 1 million spouses (mostly women) were widowed in the United States in This number is estimated to increase to 1.5 million every year by 2030.

Other losses that may also cause grief include loss of sight or hearing and losses in function caused by illnesses (eg, trouble walking from arthritis). These and other negative life events place a heavy burden on older adults.

Changing Roles as we age…
One of the most dramatic changes involves retirement. When older adults retire, they leave work and social roles that likely provided economic rewards as well as social status. In addition, older people may find that there are changes in their personal relationships after retirement. For example, spouses may find themselves spending much more time together than they ever did before. Older parents may add the role of grandparent or even great-grandparent, which brings both new rewards and new demands.

Older individuals-now younger than the old of generations past.
1993-study at Duke University-% of old Americans in good health is growing at a greater rate then the percentage of those with disabilities. Those who live to 65 are 10 times more likely to reach 100 than those born over a century ago. ,000 people have reached 100up from 32,000 in 1990.

In Your Groups Create an informational sheet on the aging process.
Should include the following information: 1. Impact on self and those around you: Ie Learning, Memory, Reaction Time, New Stresses, 2. What are some of the issues you need to deal with as you age? Ie: Less mobile, friends are dying etc. 3. How does your role change in society? IE: Retirement, Grandparents 4. What can one do once they need assistance? Ie: Nursing Home, Assisted Living Home 5. How can one cope with Aging?
