Claes Oldenburg was born 1/28/29, in Stockholm, Sweden, but spent most of his childhood in the United States. He studies at Yale University and the Art Institude of Chicago, before moving to New York City in 1956. Coosje van Bruggen was born in Groningen, the Netherlands, on June 6, 1942, Coosje van Bruggen received a master's degree in art history from the University of Groningen. She first worked with Oldenburg in 1976 on Trowel I.

Together, Oldenburg and van Bruggen have made over forty Large-Scale Projects in response to commissions by various cities, towns, and museums around the world. Your assignment is to bring in an object from home that you will use to create a larger two-dimensional representation of that object. The object that you bring in may not be larger than 10cm X 10 cm, or 100 square centimeters (approximately 4 inches X 4 inches).
