When to use go / play / do Use go for activities that end with ~ing (bowling, swimming, jogging) Use play for team sports, musical instruments, and games (soccer, piano, computer games) Use do for activities that you do alone (martial arts, DIY projects, puzzles) EXCEPTIONS: Studying: use the ~to be verb. I am studying. Golf: if there is an idea of competition, you use the verb play. However, you can say go golfing if you do it for pleasure: Tiger Woods plays golf. I like to go golfing on the weekend. Martial Arts: It is common to use the verbs practice and study with martial arts. These include tae kwon do, judo, karate, hapkido (합기도) aikido, tai chi, and kungfu (note: boxing and wrestling are not considered martial arts).
