Geography of Mayan Civilization
By: Ally, Rachel, Liz, George, and Jin

Mayan Empire The Mayans lived in the Southern Mexican States of Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Yucatan Peninsula. They lived in the mountainous regions of Sierra Madre and semi-arid plains of northern Yucatan. The states that they lived in are now known as Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Western Honduras. The Mayans live from 2000 B.C A.C.

Climate Mayan civilization was divided into two areas, the highlands and the lowlands. The northern lowland was really hot and has insufficient rainfall. Permanent lakes and rivers are basically non-existent. Only large sinkholes called cenotes can provide precious water. February through may was categorized as the dry season. It was considered that because the air was really hot and dry. Between May and November was a really rainy time. There was peak rainfall in June and October. About 95% percent of Mayan civilization centered around lakes because of droughts. Most of lakes had an 18-month supply of water.

The Terrain of Mayans The beginning of the Mayan’s terrain began with the volcanic island, more likely known as a highland in the Southern part of the territory. The lowland was located in the central or northern part. The southern portion of the lowland is covered in a rain forest.

Impact ~ The culture of the Mayans influenced the Aztecs, that came later on, in several ways. For example, they both loved cacao (chocolate) beans, used chewing gum, used the same base-20 mathematical system, and worshipped many of the same gods. ~ The astronomical and technological advances came from the Mayan civilization, including the extremely accurate Mayan calendar. ~ Maize, maize cobs, corn cob and other veggies that we eat today started in the Mayan civilization. Sorry this was late.
