5. Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Changes 2020
What do they mean for your student?

6. What is the QCE?
ALL students will be expected to attain the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) by the end of Year 12.
In order to attain a QCE by the end of Year 12, students will need to:
Achieve 20 credit points.
Pass 20 semesters or equivalent.
Pass at least one semester of English and one semester of Maths or complete Certificate II Foundation Skills to attain the Literacy and Numeracy ticks.
12 points from core subjects (must study THREE subjects for 4 semesters OR Certificate II or higher).
8 points from other (subjects, certificates).

10. VET for Completed Core Requirements
VET studies will accrue credit as results are reported, provided they meet all other QCE requirements.
Certificates II, III, IV will accrue QCE credits in the Core category at increments of 25%, 50%, 75%and 100% on completion.
Diploma and Advance Diploma will accrue 1 QCE credit point for each unit of competency completed up to 8 credit points.
Certificate I is in the Preparatory category and will accrue QCE credits on completion (NOT used for core).

14. So what does this mean from 2020?
Student choices at SET Planning for pathways are crucial for their QCE.
ALL students are aiming for a QCE.
Subject changes will impact on QCE- NO changes in year 12, minimal changes in year 11.
Units 1 & 2 need to obtain a satisfactory level to gain credit points.
Units 3 & 4 are paired need to obtain a minimum of a C to gain credit points.
Subject changes for English/Maths although allow for relaxation of Core, no longer guarantee credits points.
Need to ensure that students doing Applied subjects and off campus courses are not duplicating credits- risking QCE.

15. Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR)
What is it and who can get one?

16. What is ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank)
The ATAR is the standard measure of overall school achievement used in all other Australian states and territories. It is a rank indicating a student’s position overall relative to other students. 
The ATAR is expressed on a 2000-point scale from (highest) down to 0, in increments of 0.05. 
ATARs below 30 will be reported as ‘30.00 or less’.

17. Eligibility To be eligible for an ATAR, a student must have:
Satisfactorily completed an English subject.
Completed FIVE General subjects, or FOUR General subjects plus ONE Applied subject or VET course at AQF Certificate III or above.
Accumulated their subject results within a five-year period.
While students must satisfactorily complete an English subject to be eligible for an ATAR, the result in English will only be included in the ATAR calculation if it is one of the student’s best five subjects.

18. Subject Choices
For some senior subjects, students will need to have met the prequisite in Year 10 to take that subject in Years 11 & 12.
Students should choose subjects that:
they enjoy.
think they will achieve well in.
that are subject prerequisites for tertiary courses that they will be seeking entry to.

20. VET
Each VET qualification level (Certificate III or higher) will have a single scaled score that can be included in a student’s ATAR.
For example, a Certificate III in Hospitality and a Certificate III in Laboratory Skills will each have the same scaled score; this will be regardless of the duration or area of study of the Certificate III.
It is expected that the scaled score for a completed VET Diploma will be higher than that for a completed VET Certificate IV, which in turn will be higher than the scaled score for a completed VET Certificate III.

22. So what does this mean from 2020?
No more QCS Test.
QCAA will not issues OP’s- there will be NO OP’s.
QTAC will be responsible for issuing ATAR’s.
Anyone can get an ATAR provided they meet the requirements.
ALL subjects (General and Applied) as well as Certificate III’s or higher are eligible to be included in an ATAR.
ALL Year 12 students who meet the requirements will still receive a QCE.
Queensland’s ATAR’s will be recognised in ALL other Australian states and territories.

24th July: Letter sent home to explain the SET Plan process.
26th July: Student Login and commence SET Plan on OneSchool.
31st July: School hands to students advised pathway based on academic results from Semester report card.

2nd August: Pre-requisite and CORE talks with Tertiary pathway students.
7th August: EXPO Afternoon - SET plan, pathways and industry. Parent / Staff appointment times for SET Plan interview.

16th August: Subject selections for students through OneSchool.
21st and 22nd August: SET Plan Interviews.

28. Reminders for SET Plans
Compulsory requirement of Education Queensland.
The SET Plan must be signed by the parent / guardian with a staff member.
Enables Senior subjects with post School links.
Agreement to the College expectations of student in year 11 and 12 at Woodcrest State College.
