WPC Flexible packaging and sustainability, Global approach / DATE 06/06/12 6 2 Sustainability and packaging Brundtland Commission of the United Nations on March 20, 1987: sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. How does this relate to packaging? Meets the needs of the present: -Packaging contains, protects, preserves, transports, informs, and sells food and other essential products. -Packaging in modern society is fully integrated into business, institutional, industrial, and personal use. Without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs: -Efficient use of the earths resources -Enabling distribution of food and other goods for a thriving planet
