Post-High School Paths
University of CA 9 public/state colleges, research-funded and research- driven colleges. Degrees granted: Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD Calif State Univ 23 public/state colleges. Less emphasis on research and more on teaching. Degrees granted: Bachelor’s, some Master’s Independent & Private colleges/universities Tend to be small. Expensive but more assistance is available. Focus on “community with smaller class sizes.

Out of State Colleges Community colleges 2-year degrees and Career Technical Education Automotive technology, business, computer science, cosmetology, digital media etc. Military Must have diploma to enlist Scholarships/military academy admission available for high-achieving students

Secondary School Report (SSR) : Includes- school report, transcripts, evaluation comments/letter Invite: Vanessa Pham (not guidance specialist). For letters of rec: please provide brag sheets to teachers and myself Brag sheets can be found on the College & Career Center Website . Bragsheets and activities sheets are due by October 31st for timelines of recommendations. **TURN IN ALL SSR APPLICATION REQUESTS PRIOR TO THANKSGIVING BREAK

UC and Cal State – upon request (sometimes at the semester) Final Transcript sent to the school you are attending in June

Types of Admission Rolling Admission- no specific deadline. It is best to submit the application in the Fall. Regular Decision- most students are notified by the Spring Early Action- non-binding. Can apply to more than one school. Many applications are due in November Restrictive Early Action- non- binding contract to one school only Early Decision- binding contract and commitment to one school only. Most applications due in November; decisions are rendered in December

Community Colleges Applications begin November 20, (Coastline Community College District) CC’s have: Career training programs 2-year Associate degrees (with transfer option after)

Early Assessment Program
The EAP helps students determine their readiness to take college level English and math courses before attending a CSU, or one of the participating California Community College EAP results are accepted at all 23 CSU campuses and 81 community colleges- no UC, privates, or out-of-state universities

What Do Colleges Look For?
Challenging course selection Challenging Senior Year Schedule; continued rigor No D/F this year. If you get a D/F- see Guidance Specialist and/or Counselor Math course in Senior Year C’s or better in all “A-G” courses Essays/Personal Statements Extracurricular Activities Community Service Commitment Leadership Roles

Peer Tutoring If you are interested in tutoring other Marina students, please pick up an application in the College & Career Center as soon as possible. To be eligible as a peer tutor, you must obtain a signature from your teacher in the subject you wish to tutor, in addition to having earned an A. It is recommended that you charge no more than $10.00 an hour. If all requirements are met, you will be on the list as a peer tutor for this academic year. Students who request your service will contact you via or phone. Both parties will then make arrangements on your own (how many sessions, location, duration of each session, etc.)
