8 On this slide, you’ll see some quick facts about Stryker.
Stryker is a member of the FORTUNE 500, and we rank # Stryker made the list for the first time in 2003 with a rank of # 493, and has moved up by 170 places in eight years. Stryker has been included in the Standard & Poors 500 index since 2000, which is generally made up of large, publicly held companies that are traded on the New York Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ. Our global sales were $7.3 billion in 2010, and we have approximately 20,000 employees worldwide (12,000 of those employees are in the U.S.). In 2010, 35% of our sales were outside the United States, and the global market continues to be a strong focus for our company. Stryker sells products in 89 countries and has 30 manufacturing and research & development locations worldwide. Our mission is focused on caregivers. We make a difference by caring for the caregivers, and helping them maintain order in their organizations and restore health to their patients. We developed this mission statement as a summary of what Stryker stands for. To further explain… Caring for the caregivers Stryker offers a number of products that are designed to increase safety for the caregiver and help them do their jobs more efficiently and effectively. As caregivers take care of patients, Stryker cares for the caregivers. Medical Example: For example, Stryker offers beds, stretchers and ambulance cots with a BackSmart™ feature that may reduce back injuries associated with lifting and transferring patients. Patients are getting heavier, older and often times sicker. The physical demands of a nursing career are increasing. The result? Back strain and injuries have increased workers’ compensation claims dramatically, and nurses are leaving the profession earlier than ever. At Stryker, we’ve developed a solution that not only provides far greater protection for caregivers, but also safeguards patients, reducing the risk of falls and the potential of injury during transfers and repositioning. It’s a new approach to designing equipment. We call it BackSmart. BackSmart beds, stretchers and surfaces are designed to reduce or eliminate tasks that can cause strain or injury to the back, arms and shoulders. With reduced injuries, we improve the ability to care for patients and help caregivers to have a long and full career. “…helping them maintain order…” Stryker recognizes that a healthcare environment has the potential to be fraught with chaos. Stryker is positioned to help our customers run a more efficient business by recommending processes and protocol associated with our products and programs. Stryker recognizes that the full spectrum of working with suppliers is important to providers – from placing the order to managing the invoice and payment cycle, as well as supporting the delivery, installation, training, use, disposal and/or reprocessing process.   Instruments / Endoscopy / Sustainability Solutions Example: Stryker Instruments, Endoscopy and Sustainability Solutions are members of the Global Healthcare Exchange, or GHX. (Note to presenter: check to see if your customer uses GHX – check with your division’s IT department, customer service, or David Distel at GHX offers an electronic platform for ordering, tracking, and paying for products, as well as managing contracts and pricing. “…and restore health to their patients.” Orthopaedics Example: The Triathlon™ Knee is an evolutionary design developed to more closely reproduce natural knee motion, designed to provide mobility with stability through 150+ degrees of flexion. Stryker remains dedicated to the continual development of innovative technologies to help meet surgeons' and patients’ needs. As a pioneer in wear performance technologies, Stryker Orthopaedics' scientists have developed a breakthrough in bearing technology - a polyethylene bearing material that has shown excellent wear characteristics while preserving mechanical strength in lab testing.  This advanced bearing technology has properties suitable for knee as well as hip applications. X3 Advanced Bearing Technology is available for Stryker’s Triathlon and Scorpio Knee Systems.
