The Building of the Pyramids
The ancient Egyptians built their pyramids on the west bank of the river Nile. This was because the Egyptians linked the west with death, as this was where the sun set. The site had to be far enough away from the river to avoid flooding, but close enough for building materials to be transported to it. Egyptian pyramids have sides that face north, south, east and west. There is still debate among archeologists as to how exactly the pyramids were built… But we know that they used sleds, wooden rollers, and levers to move the big blocks.

Activity for Today Next, with your group read page 86 and 87 and examine the pictures. Imagine that you lived in the lost city near the pyramids at Giza. Pick one of the jobs described in the text and write a journal entry describing a day in the life of that person. 5 or more sentences. If you have time, draw a picture of yourself! You are going to trace the process of building a pyramid. Start here on page 84: When does the process begin? Then, most of the steps continue on page 85.

Steps to building a Pyramid
Planning begins after pharaoh is crowned. Select a site on west bank of Nile. Workers cleared the land. Sides set to face N, S, E, and W. Workers cut the building blocks. Fine stone loaded onto barges & carried to site. Dragged and pushed blocks up ramps into place using sleds, wooden rollers, and levers.
