Final Project – Lesson Plan

Topic: Comparing Weather Conditions
Objective: Students will be able to write 3 sentences about the weather by using comparative adjectives. Language Focus: Writing, expressing comparisons. Class Time: 45 minutes

Students Profile Age/ Level: 7°, 12 years old
Number of Students in the class: 15 Prior Knowledge: They already know the basic weather conditions: cloudy, sunny, rainy, snowy, as well as temperature terms, like warm and cold; they also have learned the future tense of the verb to be (will be); the adjectives, and the days of the week. Limitation: They are not allowed to bring their smartphones and similar devices to the school, so an adaptation is necessary for the use of technology.

Warm-up Kahoot review session in groups of 3 (led by the teacher). They will review their prior knowledge on Comparative Adjectives. 5 minutes

Materials needed Printed Kahoot answer cards for the groups.
Teacher’s laptop. Teacher’s smartphone. Projector.

Rationale This warm-up activity will serve as scaffolding to start the topic. They will apply their knowledge of Comparative Adjectives to the topic’s context to achieve the objective.

Activity 1 (F/A) The groups will complete a handout with the comparative version of the given basic weather conditions. Each group will have 1 handout, so the students will have to discuss and agree before filling its blanks. Time: 15 minutes

Materials needed Handouts given by the teacher.
Students’ pens or pencils.

Assessment Group Formative Self-Assessment Tool for Activity 1
Instructions: As the teacher shows the correct written form of the comparative adjectives, the students will check if they wrote such forms properly.

Rationale They will complete this handout cooperatively in order scaffold for the next activity, as hey will use such filled handout as a reference.

Activity 2 (F/A) The groups will play a puzzle in order to form sentences. Each student will write 1 sentence in the mini whiteboards Time: 20 minutes

Materials needed Day-of-the-week tickets and illustrated-weather- condition puzzle tickets Mini whiteboards. Whiteboard color markers (1 different per student). Whiteboard erasers.

Rubric: the teacher will observe the groups’ whiteboard and check the following:

Rationale The students will do this activity in order to assess if they are able to write sentences comparing the weather of different days of the week, as well as to make the class more dynamic.

Wrap-up Individual exit ticket: the teacher will show 2 images of places with opposite weather conditions. The students will, individually, fill an exit ticket with all the possible sentence combinations. Time: 5 minutes

Rationale By this doing this, the students will demonstrate that they learned the comparative adjectives.

Summative Assessment The Summative Assessment will be taken on the next class. It will consist of a Written Test.

Written Test The students will use a poster brought by the teacher as a reference. Such poster will contain a table with the days of the week, and each day will contain a different weather condition. The students will be free to choose the days of the week they will use to write the comparison sentences. They will have to write 5 sentences.

Instructions The groups will take turns.
One by one, each group student will go in front of the class to take 2 Day-of-the- Week-Tickets from one basket and 1 weather-condition-ticket from the other basket, Then he will quickly write down the key words in the group’s mini whiteboard, and Then will go back to his/her group to write his/her corresponding sentence such mini whiteboard, based on the keywords he/she took. The sentence structure will be: _________ will be _____ than __________.
