The Sun- Observing the Sun
NEVER look directly at the Sun. It can damage your eyes. You can view the Sun by making a small hole in a piece of paper. Then, hold the paper with the hole about a meter from a black piece of paper. You will see an image of the Sun. Warning! Before a description is given of how to make solar observations, there must be a strong warning! Observing the Sun can be dangerous. NEVER look at the Sun directly through a telescope – you could be blinded. This slide is to show students that the Sun can be observed. The teacher is NOT expected to make this viewing device. There is a safe, indirect viewing technique to observe an image of the Sun – a pinhole projector where a pinhole or small opening is used to form an image of the Sun on a screen placed about a meter behind the opening.

The Sun is a medium-sized star. The Sun is a sphere. The Sun is very HOT- like a giant oven. The Sun provides light and heat for the Earth. The Sun has features on it (more on this later).
