Elementary to JH Differences
School Hours No recess NO MORE STRAIGHT LINES More responsibilities and privileges New friends and interests Open lunch room seating Arrival/Dismissal

6th Grade Schedule 7 classes- ~45 minutes in length
30 minute lunch AND advisory 5 minute passing period between classes 5 core classes (English, Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies) 1 fine arts elective P.E.

Types of classes Academic
Pre-Advanced Placement (PreAP)- prepares for Pre AP and AP classes in high school Gifted & Talented- must already be identified and in Challenge for GT classes Not a pullout program like in elementary, GT students are combined with PreAP

Academic Classes Instruction and learning is at grade level
Prepares students for college and post-secondary education Provides more time for repetition

PreAp Classes Instruction and learning is above grade level
Designed to challenge motivated, independent and organized students who have strong class management skills – challenged students do not always make straight A’s Prepares students for Pre AP and AP courses in high school Moves at a faster pace Requires more independent learning More homework

PreAP Math 5th grade – approx. 60 objectives
6th grade Academic – approx. 64 objectives 6th grade PreAP – over 80 objectives with some being 7th grade objectives Pre-AP level of instruction will focus on preparation for taking Algebra I in 8th grade – a student must start Pre-AP math in 6th grade to be on this track

Schedule Changes in NOW is the time to discuss course options. Students may request a change in course selections for the following year until the course verification process if complete. After course verification, requests for schedule changes will be honored for a limited number of reasons such as: Error in scheduling on part of school, such as data entry error; Student failure in a prerequisite course; Change in program (athletics, fine arts, etc.); Level changes as recommended by teachers and school counselor with parental knowledge and principal approval; Student did not meet standard on the STAAR/EOC, or did not meet standard on the benchmark test.
