1 Romeo and Juliet: Love is more Powerful than Hate
Hannah Prange, Hennessy Ta, Nikolina Stupar

2 Introduction Introduction: Love is often more powerful than hate in a person's life, and can make people do crazy things, and make drastic decisions. Thesis: The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet has “Much to do with hate, but more with love” (1.1.73) 3 supporting Ideas: Romeo’s love led to tragedy Juliet’s love led to tragedy 3 minor characters love led to tragedy

3 Romeo

4 Romeo's Love Leads to Great Tragedies
“I do protest I never injured thee, / But love thee better than thou canst devise, / Till thou shalt know the reason of my love; / And so, good Capulet, which name I tender / As dearly as mine own, be satisfied” ( ). Context: Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt because he just marries Juliet and love's Tybalt like family.

5 Romeo's Love Leads to Great Tragedies
“Ha, banishment? Be merciful, say ‘death’: / For exile hath more terror in his look, Much more than death. / Do not say “banishment”!” ( ). Romeo threatens to kill himself in Friar Lawrence's cell after he gets banished, because he believes banishment is a worse penalty than death since he can not be with his love.

6 Romeo's Love Leads to Great Tragedies
“Come, cordial and not poison, go with me / To Juliet's grave, for thee must I use thee” ( ) Romeo buys poison to end his life because he thinks that Juliet is dead.

7 Juliet

8 Juliet’s Love Leads to Great Tragedies
“ I pray you tell my lord and father, madam, / I will not marry yet , and when I do, I swear / It shall be Romeo, who you know I hate / Rather than Paris. These are news indeed” ( ). Juliet refuses to marry Paris and begs Lady Capulet for approval

9 Juliet’s Love Leads to Great Tragedies
“Tell me not, Friar, that thou hearest of this, / Unless thou tell me how I may prevent it. / If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help, / Do thou but call my resolution wise, / And with this knife I’ll help it presently ”( ). Juliet is not able to see Romeo because of the banishment, she is forced to marry Paris and would rather kill herself then not being with the one person she truly loves

10 Juliet’s Love Leads to Great Tragedies
“Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here’s drink-I drink to thee” ( ) Juliet is risking her life as she drinks the potion for Romeo

11 Friar Lawrence Nurse Lord Capulet

12 Friar Lawrence’s Love Leads to Great Tragedy
“In one respect i’ll thy assistant be: / For this alliance may so happy prove / To turn your households’ rancour to pure love” ( ). Friar agree’s to marry Romeo and Juliet hoping the feud between the families will come to an end.

13 The Nurse’s Love Leads to Great Tragedy
“If ye should lead her in a fool’s paradise, as they say, / It were a very gross kind of behaviour, as they say; for / The gentlewoman is young; and therefore, if you should / Deal double with her, truly it were an ill thing” ( ). The nurse talks to Romeo for Juliet about their marriage. The nurse talks to Romeo because she wants what is best for Juliet.

14 Lord Capulet’s Love Leads to Great Tragedy
“I’ll look to like, if looking liking move; / But no more deep will I endart mine eye / Than your consent gives strength to make it fly” ( ). Lord Capulet is giving Juliet a decision on who she wants to marry. Although, he does not say it directly to her, she knows her father is more lenient than other fathers which gives her hope that she could love her enemy.

15 Conclusion Love is more powerful than hate when it comes to the tragedy If the characters had given up on love and kept feuding, the outcome would have been different Several of the characters were missing love and were in need of it, or wanted it for others, which led to the decisions that caused the tragedy “These violent delights have violent ends” If Romeo and juliet didn't try to make their love work outcome would be different Less deaths If everyone loved each other, the two lovers could have lived a happier and longer life and everyone would be in peace instead of having such violent endings which kept the fued going. If everyone took their time thing could have been thought out more
