ASHP’s Grassroots Network!
Talk to Congress Offer “real world” perspectives Participate in local & national elections Give to ASHP-PAC Involvement in the political process is an important vehicle to improve patient care…it’s part of our oath as pharmacists. As a member of a SAG, you’re a part of the team that helps to advance ASHP’s public policy agenda via grassroots advocacy. You’ll be among the first people to learn about our advocacy initiatives and ASHP will look to you to take an active part in efforts like outreach to members of Congress, offering expertise to state and federal regulatory agencies, and giving to ASHP-PAC.

The Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act (H. R
The Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act (H.R. 592 / S. 314) Allows pharmacists to be paid for services to Medicare patients in medically underserved communities Pharmacists can be paid for services authorized by their states. Bipartisan support 291 cosponsor in the House of Representatives 49 cosponsors in the Senate Provider status legislation, the Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act, focuses on meeting an unmet need in medically underserved areas, and helping to address the shortage of primary care physicians The bills would amend the Part B section of Medicare and add pharmacists to the list of recognized healthcare providers We’ve had a lot of success in building support for the bills through the work of ASHP members and the members of the Patient Access to Pharmacists’ Care Coalition. We are currently working with the Sponsors offices to get a CBO score and a hearing. We need every ASHP member, especially those in our Section, to help make this happen.

What Can I Do? Congress at home August 3- September 5
Prime time for outreach to elected officials Suggested activities: In-district meetings at legislator’s office Practice site tour—”Take Your Legislator to Work” Town hall or open forum Online toolkit: “Political Activity for Pharmacists” Members of Congress are at home on break in August. During their break, they meet with constituents to get a sense of the issues that concern the people that they represent. This is a prime time to reach out to your members of Congress: your two Senators and your representative. Your first step should be to go to ASHP’s Grassroots Advocacy Center, where you can send a pre-written asking your member of Congress to support the bill. If your legislator is already a cosponsor, the system will send him or her a thank you . In both versions, you should personalize the to include examples from your practice that show the value that you bring to the healthcare team. The ask is very simple: Support the bill. If the member of Congress is a co-sponsor, ask him or her to push for a hearing on the bill so that the case can be made publicly for provider status. You can also ask to meet with your member of Congress in his or her local office, invite them to visit your practice site, or you could attend a town hall or open forum to make your ask in person. ASHP has an online Political Activity Toolkit that will guide you through all of these activities.

ASHP-PAC is Your Voice Educates members of Congress about pharmacists’ patient care roles Supports “pharmacy-friendly” candidates Builds support for legislation that advances ASHP’s public policy goals Another important advocacy tool is ASHP-PAC. A PAC, or political action committee, raises money to help identify and support political candidates. ASHP staff work closely with government officials, but federal law prohibits organizations from using member dues to donate to candidates for office. ASHP-PAC focuses attention on issues facing pharmacists in hospitals & clinics. It also allows ASHP members to support “pharmacy friendly candidates” at a level that would be difficult for us to do as individuals. That’s why even small contributions of $50 or $100 are important. If every ASHP member gave $100; ASHP-PAC would have more than 4 million dollars… We contribute to the campaigns of members of health-related committees and champions of our issues, like provider status, drug shortages, drug pricing, 340B, and compounding.

Get Out the Vote! November 8
Register to vote Check your polling location and hours Know what’s on the ballot Encourage your neighbors The first step toward achieving goals like provider recognition and expanded patient care roles is to elect members of Congress who will support your role in patient care and champion the issues that affect your practice Choose a candidate that supports your views on a variety of issues Check with your Board of Elections that you are registered to vote with your current address Each state is a little different, check with your Board of Elections to verify where you should go and when you can vote Take a look at the ballot to know if your state is electing a Senator this election year or if there is an issue that will impact your community
