1 Savanna and Chapparal

2 Desert-Grassland Boundary
Unstable—due to changes in amount of water Area adjacent to desert The most significant limiting factor is rainfall

3 Savanna Tropical grasslands ranging from dry scrubland to wet, open woodland

4 General Characteristics
• sa•van•na [suh-van-uh] –noun. a plain characterized by coarse grasses and scattered tree growth esp. on the margins of the tropics where the rainfall is seasonal, as in eastern Africa. • Savanna biome is transitional between tropical rainforest and desert biomes

5 Savanna Climate Wet/Dry Climate (Aw Köppen Climate Group)
Wet Season (summer): 78-86°F (25-30°C), scarce precipitation Dry Season (winter): 68-78°F (20-25°C) • Average Annual Rain Fall: 10-30in ( cm)

6 The Savanna biome has a wet/dry climate.
Its Köppen climate group is Aw. The Astands for a tropical climate, and the wfor a dry season in the winter.

9 African Velt A velt is a grassland

10 Chaparral

11 Chaparral Location The west coast of the United States, the west coast of South America, the Cape Town area of South Africa, the western tip of Australia and the coastal areas of the Mediterranean.

12 Climate 10-17 inches of rain all year, and most of it comes in the winter. Because of the long period of dryness in the summer, only plants with hard leaves can survive, such as scrub oaks, chamiso shrubs, pines, cork and olive trees. Many leaves are also hairy so they can collect the moisture out of the air and use it.

13 Chaparral Animals Cactus Wren Wild goat Aardwolf

14 Predator/Prey Relationships
Defense mechanisms are very important to all animal life. Animals must eat to survive. With predators always on the lookout for a meal, prey must constantly avoid being eaten.

15 Adaptations Burrowing Trickery Leopard camouflaged in the grass. speed

16 Predator-Prey Cycle

17 Wind The wind helps grasses reproduce

18 Runners Horizontal stems below the ground that help grasses to survive fires.
